Postgraduate Educational Activities for Degree Year 2007 UMass Boston Bachelor’s Degree Recipients Subsequent Attendance The Office of Institutional Research and Policy Studies is using the National Student Clearinghouse (NSC) to track the postgraduate educational activities of some of our Bachelor’s degree recipients. We have recently upgraded our level of participation with the NSC, so we are now eligible to receive more detailed information in response to our inquiries. It should be noted that NSC records are retrieved by name and date of birth, so if there has been any change in a student’s name compared to our records, that student will not be found in the NSC databases. Several schools in the area, including UMass Medical do not report to the NSC. Given that, and the problem of identifying students by name and date of birth alone, we know that the number of students found is less than the real number. However, these are the best data available. We recently reported on the AY 2006 Bachelor’s degree recipients. As a follow-up to that, this report will address the post-graduate educational behavior of our AY 2007 Bachelor’s degree recipients. In the 2007 degree year, the degree granting dates for our students were August and December 2006 and June 2007. We submitted a listing of 1,418 students to the NSC. They could not locate 69 anywhere in their files indicating a problem with name or DOB as listed. Another 5 students were located but had their information blocked from being distributed. Of the other 1,344 students, 588 or about 44% had enrolled in some form of higher education subsequent to their receipt of a Bachelor’s degree from UMass Boston. The percentage of graduates continuing their education was identical to what was previously reported for the AY 2006 graduates. Our graduates attended a number of different types of schools. For 87 graduates, the first school attended after receiving a degree at UMass Boston was a two-year school, and 501 were located at four-year schools. About 40% of the students attended a private four-year institution in Massachusetts or elsewhere, and more than a quarter attended UMass Boston as their first postgraduate school. Overall, the students were located at 150 different institutions as their first entry into postgraduate education. The 2007 cohort was more likely to attend a two-year school and less likely to attend a private four-year school than the 2006 cohort. The numbers of students who attended postgraduate education at UMass Boston, other Massachusetts four-year publics, in and out of state four-year private institutions, and in and out of state two-year schools are presented in Figure 1 on the following page. While about 40% of the located students began postgraduate work by fall 2007, others delayed entry. About 16% began their first postgraduate education as recently as fall 2010. About 221 were actively enrolled in fall 2011 or spring 2012, including 24 who are currently enrolled at UMass Boston. Table 1 on the following page lists the schools first attended by 10 or more of the graduates. The complete listing of all of the first schools attended by the graduates The Office of Institutional Research And Policy Studies Page 1 of 15 June 20, 2012 Kevin B. Murphy broken down into four-year and two-year institution tables is presented in Appendix I beginning on page 6. The four-year institution list begins on page 7 and the two-year list is on page 10. Murphy Subsequent Degree Attainment The details on all subsequent degree attainment are not fully available. A number of institutions signal that a student has graduated but, unlike UMass Boston, do not specify a degree title or the degree major. Of the 206 students listed as graduated in postgraduate programs including those at UMass Boston, five had received two credentials and two had received three. Five students received certificates at unspecified levels. Four of those were in medical fields at Massachusetts community colleges. Four received graduate certificates, all from UMass Boston. A total of 4 students received Associate’s degrees, three of them in medical fields. Six students attained a second Bachelor’s degree, with five of those in Nursing, including three taken here at UMass Boston. The Master of Education was the most popular degree with 38 students attaining it. After unspecified credentials, it was followed closely by the Master of Science degree attained by 28, the MBA by 27 graduates, and the Master of Arts by 26 graduates. All of these were attained within roughly five years of attaining the UMass Boston Bachelor’s degree. A full listing of degree titles by the number of students attaining the degree is presented in Table 2. The NSC provides major data for only those who attain a degree, and as has been stated earlier, is incomplete. However, the combinations of undergraduate degrees and postgraduate fields are important. For instance, we see many English majors going on to receive Master’s in Education, but also others receiving Master’s degrees in fields as different as Criminal Justice, Nursing, and Mental Health Counseling. Similarly, we find Psychology graduates attaining graduate degrees in field as diverse as Nursing, Clinical Social Work, and Physical Therapy. A listing of the various postgraduate credentials attained by our students with granting institution, credential title, and credential major listed by first undergraduate major for every major with six or more graduates who received postgraduate credentials is presented in Appendix II, which begins on page 11. The Office of Institutional Research And Policy Studies Page 4 of 15 June 20, 2012 Kevin B. Murphy Postgraduate Education at UMass Boston More than a quarter of the 588 graduates we located in postgraduate education first enrolled at UMass Boston (160). The percentage attending UMass Boston is virtually identical to that of the AY 2006 graduates. Many of them enrolled here immediately after receiving their Bachelor’s degrees. An additional 27 students attended another institution first after graduation, but then enrolled at UMass Boston for at least one additional semester. One measure of satisfaction is to ask students whether, if they had to do it over again, they would enroll at the same university. Of all the Bachelor’s degree recipients in AY 2007, about 14% did do it over again by enrolling at UMass Boston for postgraduate course work. Of those who were located in any form of postgraduate education, about 32% chose UMass Boston. Of the 187 alumni who have enrolled at UMass Boston at some time since receiving the initial Bachelor’s degree, 77 individuals had received another credential here by December 2011. Four received graduate certificates, four received additional Bachelor’s degrees, and 70 received Master’s degrees, with one of those attaining two Master’s degrees here. Table 3 has the details of the credential titles and majors attained at UMass Boston. Murphy Conclusion The data provided by the National Student Clearinghouse while less than perfect, has improved immensely over the years. The decision to participate in their “Degree Verify” program has given us the opportunity to find many of the degrees attained by our Bachelor’s degree recipients after their time at UMass Boston. The Registrar’s Office did a tremendous amount of work to comply with the needs of the NSC’s “Degree Verify” program. Without that work, NSC would not have provided us with the degrees and major information in their files. The NSC data is difficult to work with because of many duplicate records, missing data within the records, etc. However, OIRP is in the process of submitting the 2008, 2009, and 2010 Bachelor’s degree cohorts to the NSC and will produce additional reports on those cohorts in preparation for our NEASC review and with new reporting requirements for the U.S. Department of Education in mind.
