Design a Workout/Dance Routine – Physical Education
LEARNING GOALS: Fitness knowledge; group work; creating a balanced fitness/dance routine.
Use ‘of Elements of Dance’:
• BODY: body awareness, locomotor and non-locomotor movements.
• SPACE: pathways, directions, proximity of dancers to one another, various group formations
• TIME: tempo, rhythm, pause, with music, duration (e.g., short, long), acceleration/deceleration
• ENERGY: effort, force, quality
• RELATIONSHIPS: dancers to props/objects (e.g., in front of, inside, over, around), meet/part,
follow/lead, emotional connections between dancers, groupings
Equipment: Paper and pencil per group; music with a strong 4/4 beat; CD or MP3 Player
1.
Discuss with your group members the fitness exercises we have done in class. Then plan a
fitness/Dance routine using the following guidelines:


A warming up activity
An aerobic activity (strengthens the heart)

An upper body strength/dance routine

An abdominal strength/dance routine

A lower body strength/dance routine

A cooling-down stretch activity
2.
Record your fitness/dance routine on paper. (See Example Figure 1 below) Decide how many
times to repeat each exercise/dance routine, using counts of four, eight or sixteen.
3.
You are allowed the use of props and materials (e.g., fabric, chairs, hats, hula hoops, balls, sticks)
into dance pieces they create (e.g., use fabric as a shawl or an extension of an arm gesture or the
movement of a ship’s sail; use a stretchy fabric body bag to create abstract shapes; use an artifact
like a garbage can to explore rhythm and body movement)
4.
Decide on the music you will use for your workout (Discuss with teacher to make sure it’s
appropriate). Practice your workout in time to the music’s beat. Perform each exercise using
correct techniques. Try and lead the class through the workout.
