Wilkes County Schools Elementary and Middle School Curriculum Director NATURE OF WORK The elementary and middle school curriculum director is one whose primary concern is the improvement of learning opportunities through the provision of instructional leadership. Under limited supervision, performs a variety of supervisory and administrative tasks to provide leadership and cooperation of curricular and instructional programs across all organizational levels. The elementary and middle school director serves as part of the Instructional Services Staff charged with the responsibility of planning, implementing, and evaluating an educational program relevant to the needs of the student population of Wilkes County School System. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Supervises elementary and middle school instructional specialists and meets weekly with each group to discuss curriculum issues and plan in-service. Organizes and attends monthly elementary and middle school principal cluster meetings to discuss curriculum and instruction issues. Initiates and oversees curricular and instructional programs designed to improve instruction and student achievement, kindergarten through 8th grade. Coordinates and integrates the K-8 curriculum and instruction programs. Works towards developing an improved understanding of children’s educational needs on the part of teachers, administrators, and parents. Interprets the present curriculum and proposed curriculum changes to the board, the administration, the staff, and the general public. Provides in-service training to support implementation of newly developed curricula. Works closely with the textbook adoption process. Supervises development of instructional guidelines, policies, and regulations. Manages the preparation of office budget requests and monitors expenditures. 1 Wilkes County Schools Elementary and Middle School Curriculum Director Provides assistance in the interpretation of data to administrators and teachers. Keeps informed on the latest research, trends, and developments in all areas of education and interpret for staff as necessary. Assists with the beginning teacher support programs and monitors mentor contacts with beginning teachers. Upon request of principals, observe teachers in their classrooms and offer insights for the enhancement of effective instruction. Analyzes data to improve school operations. Assists with planning, producing, and distributing district newsletters. Assists with the district curriculum webpage. Completes random moment in time studies as required by MAC program guidelines. Performs other specific job-relate duties as directed. MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE Master’s degree in Education and/or Education Administration and 6 to 9 years of experience as a school principal or other educational administrative capacity; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skill, and abilities. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS Must be physically able to operate a variety of equipment including computers, copiers, calculators, etc. Must be able to exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to lift, carry, push, and pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Light work usually requires walking or standing to a significant degree. Requires the ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, to follow oral and written directions. Must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently in a variety of technical and professional languages. Requires the ability to utilize mathematical formulas; to add and subtract; multiply and divide; utilize decimals and percentages. Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving of instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under stress and when confronted with emergency situations. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITITES Broad knowledge of the principles and practices of school administration. Broad knowledge of current educational trends in curriculum and instruction. Comprehensive knowledge of methods, materials, procedures, and practices of the specialties assigned to the office. Comprehensive knowledge of North Carolina Standard Course of Study. Ability to assess the needs of students. Ability to make oral presentations before large groups of people. Ability to exercise considerable tact and courtesy in frequent contact with the public. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and citizens. Ability to manage fiscal, physical, and human resources to successfully carry out the function and programs of the office. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
