It can be spelled “a” (before an “l”), au, aw, augh, ough, or just “o”. In some parts of the country, it is pronounced differently from the short /o/ sound, but in California, we tend to pronounce it like the short /o/ sound. In math we are working with the "Step Up to Third Grade" math pages. For our math facts for the rest of the year, we will be memorizing multiplication facts. Friday’s math facts homework is optional. In social studies, we are finishing the unit about economics in the social studies book, Reflections. The students will learn about basic economics involving goods and services, consumers, producers, and businesses. The students will learn about basic economics involving money, scarce resources, choosing how to spend limited money, and international trade. For science life cycles, students are observing the final stage in the metamorphosis of Oriental Silk Moths. The pupae inside the cocoons should be emerging as flightless moths this week. The adult silk moths will dissolve the ends of their cocoons and emerge to live very short lives. All they do is mate, lay eggs, and die. They can’t fly. Spelling Words – Test Friday /au/ spelled “a, au, aw, augh, ough, o Voluntary Challenge Words false awful almost cause caught thought talk draw always because taught brought author also already watch often caution crawled although awesome August automatic waterfall coughed fought automobile audition autumn auction audience autobiography All students are tested on ten or twelve of the regular words. Students who have not studied the Challenge Words should not attempt them on the test.
