This Week’s Curriculum Information The mandatory training for Reading Group Helpers will be given the first week we return in September. The mandatory training is offered on Wednesday and repeated again on Thursday. Helpers can attend either training day. The following week we will begin our reading groups on Tuesday and Thursday. If we have enough helpers, we can add reading groups on Monday, too. Please feel free to e-mail me at brouse@cnusd.k12.ca.us. The school’s website page is http://www.cnusd.k12.ca.us/lies. (The “lies” stands for “Lincoln Elementary School.”) Try going to “Teacher Sites” on the top black bar, then “B. Rouse,” and then “Informational Pages.” We are reading another fantasy story, Julius, in our reading and language arts book this week. We will be working on distinguishing fact from fiction and reality from fantasy. We will finish our social studies unit on map skills and geography this week. Students will have their final tests on North American geography this week. California State Standards require that second graders identify the countries in North America (Canada, United States, and Mexico), the oceans (Atlantic and Pacific), major mountain ranges (Rockies, Appalachians, Cascades, and Sierra Nevada), and major rivers (Mississippi, Ohio, Missouri, Rio Grande, Colorado, Columbia, Snake, and Sacramento). We have been working on these in class. In math, we are finishing Unit 2 on addition strategies. Although the problems seem easy, the emphasis each day is on a specific strategy to use for learning and remembering the addition facts. Memorizing the facts, as I require students to do (because it’s a state standard) is not considered a problem-solving strategy. We do not have any math facts this week because we are not in school next Monday for a test. If your child has been having trouble doing the math facts in the time allowed, please work with your child during the break to memorize the facts up to a sum of 20. Using flash cards and practicing orally in the car are good ways to learn the facts. Finger counting should disappear this year as students commit these facts to memory. Spelling Words – Test Thursday Students who have not studied the Challenge Words or who do not get “O’s” should not attempt them on the test. “Short /e/, short /o/, & short /u/” words Rule Breakers Voluntary Challenge Words wet leg went get yes stop fox job mop got just but nut fun hug shut under from of any block every thought upon only body cut special often surprise brought reason All students are tested on 10 - 12 regular words. Other words that follow the same pattern, but are not on the regular list, may be included. Those who need more challenge should learn the Voluntary Challenge Words; eight will be tested. Students who have not studied the Challenge Words should not attempt them on the test.
