Although I will be there, this field trip is not sponsored by Lincoln or CNUSD and is totally voluntary. The small museum is free and very close. The exhibits include rocks, gems, and minerals, which we will be studying beginning next week, and biology specimens from around the world. There will be special interactive activities set up for our students by the university students. I will give science extra credit to those who attend. La Sierra University is on Riverwalk, off the Pierce Street exit, which is the first exit east of McKinley. More information and a map will come later. Families and friends are invited to participate. Bring the family or plan a carpool. STAR testing (also known as CST or California Standards Test) is scheduled for Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday this week. Tests begin first thing in the morning. Remind your children to gets lots of sleep and eat a good breakfast before the testing. Because bananas and protein are supposed to keep brains alert, please give your child a banana and some protein as part of the breakfast. Students must be on time. They may bring baseball-style “thinking caps” to wear during the testing and at recess. Our reading this week focuses on comparison and contrast of Cinderella stories from various cultures around the world. (Comparing multi-cultural fairy tales is a state standard for second grade.) We’ll make a chart showing the similarities and differences among the various stories. I have Cinderella stories from many different cultures, and have tried to collect ones that come from ancestral cultures of as many students in my class as possible. We’ll compare the stories (tell how they are the same) and contrast them (tell how they are different). This week students may bring “snugglies” (soft items for snuggling with) while I read Cinderella stories from many different cultures. The snuggly items must fit in the backpack. Your child may bring a teddy bear, pillow, blanket, or even two of these, if they both fit in the backpack. Remind your child that the “snugglies” cannot be taken out of the backpacks before school or during dismissal after school. We’ll keep the “snugglies” at school all week so that we can use them throughout the week. The Oriental silk moths are spinning their cocoons and are entering the pupa stage. Real silk is made from these cocoons. After this pupa stage (the third in the four stages of complete metamorphosis), the adult silk moths will dissolve the ends of their cocoons and emerge to live very short lives. All they do is mate, lay eggs, and die.
