Overall Expectations (as indicated in the Ministry Arts Curriculum)
Creating and Performing : apply the creative process to create and perform music for a variety of purposes, using the elements and techniques of music;
Reflecting, Responding, and Analysing : apply the critical analysis process to communicate their feelings, ideas, and understandings in response to a variety of music and musical experiences;
Exploring Forms and Cultural Contexts : demonstrate an understanding of a variety of musical genres and styles from the past and present, and their sociocultural and historical contexts.
Evaluation will be based on the overall expectations listed. It can include: participation, formal written tests, group work, projects, creative presentations and compositions, performance tests, oral responses, journals, practice logs, and self-evaluation.
Materials which each student must supply:
A duotang with lined paper
A pen and pencil (eraser also recommended)
Students may purchase an Accent on Achievement book #1 of their own from Long & McQuade if they wish
It is suggested that students purchase their mouthpieces (*this is not compulsory) for hygenic reasons – they can be purchased from Long & McQuade Music – the following prices are approximate:

Note: flute headjoints are not available to purchase
All instrument related purchases should wait until instrument choices are finalized
-should the student wish to discontinue playing the instrument after they complete the grade 8 program, he/she may wish to sell the used mouthpiece for half price – this can be posted in the music room (there can be no guarantees of resale).

Extra-curricular opportunities : (registration forms are available in the music room and the school office)
Aldershot Choir –open to all students (grade 7—12); rehearsals – Wednesdays after school from 2:45 – 4:15 PM
Aldershot Jr. Band – students must already have some facility on a band instrument to be part of the jr. band, which consists of grade 7-9 students; rehearsals – Tuesdays. 7:00 AM – 8:00 AM & one sectional/practice session a week at break
Small Ensembles – students who would like to work in small groups (e.g. duets, trios, quartets) are encouraged to sign up for small ensembles. Rehearsal time is to be advised.

Expectations:
Students should respect other students and their work, themselves and their own work, the teacher, and the room, including instruments, music and other equipment
Students are responsible for any work missed and should always strive to do their best.
Students should have a positive attitude and enthusiastic effort
Students should practise at least 2 times a week for at least 15 minutes each time at home or during breaks at school, and seek help when needed – students will keep track of their practicing in the music room
Students should always come to class prepared, with all their materials
Parents should sign, date and return the Instrument Use Contract before students can take instrument home
We all have our own personal soundtrack. Take an active role in the music that shapes your life.
Keep an open mind and come to class prepared to expand your knowledge and uderstanding of the music that surrounds you.
