JOB SPECIFICATION
1. PREAMBLE
The Southern Adelaide Health Service (Southern Health) was established on 1 July 2004 and
brings together Flinders Medical Centre, Noarlunga Health Services and Drug and Alcohol
Services of SA. The Service also maintains a close affiliation with the Repatriation General
Hospital and other health services in the southern area.
With 330,000 people in the region, a budget of more than $350M and about 4,000 staff, Southern
Health is working towards coordination of services across the region and working cooperatively to
improve the health of the community and to reduce the demand on acute hospital services.
2. SUMMARY OF THE BROAD PURPOSE OF THE POSITION and its responsibilities/duties
The incumbent contributes to the provision of medical imaging services using specialised
equipment to perform diagnostic radiographic examinations for clients/patients across a range of
specialities of medicine working in the General, ED, and MRI units. Working under reduced
professional direction perform more complex medical imaging diagnostic services using
specialised equipment requiring selection and application of new techniques and methodologies
within the MRI speciality unit.
3. REPORTING/WORKING RELATIONSHIPS
(to whom the person reports, staff for whom the person is
responsible, and other significant connections and working relationships within the organisation)
Accountable to the Chief Radiographer.
Responsible on a day-to-day basis to the Radiographer in Charge of the rostered unit.
Regular liaison with Senior Radiographers and other unit staff, particularly Shift Supervisors,
Medical, Nursing and Clerical staff.
4. SPECIAL CONDITIONS (such as non-metropolitan location, travel requirements, frequent overtime, etc)





May be required to work within other locations of the Southern Adelaide Health Service.
May be rostered over 24 hours, 7 days a week on a rotating roster of 19 days per month.
The incumbent is required to be available to work in other sections of the Medical Imaging
Division as per roster.
Will be required to undertake a health assessment prior to commencement.
Appointment will be subject to a satisfactory Offender History Check.

Contribute to the provision of an MRI and diagnostic x-ray imaging service to clients
by:
performing standard MRI examinations under reducing professional direction as they develop
competency and proficiency in these examinations.
undertaking general x-ray medical imaging procedures which may be broad and complex in
nature meet ensuring the outcomes meet appropriate professional standards of practice
working as an independent practitioner.
accepting professional responsibility under reducing professional supervision for imaging
procedures assigned to their unit.
applying professional knowledge and professional judgement to select and adapt scanning
techniques best suited for the clinical situation with reducing professional supervision .
communicating any unusual findings of the examination to Radiologist or Clinician, which may
facilitate an immediate review of the patient’s clinical status.
consulting with the patient or patient’s guardian to document patient history regarding location
and incidence of patients’ presenting symptoms or to determine the mechanics of an injury
applying professional knowledge and professional judgement to select and adapt imaging
techniques best suited for the clinical situation.
exercising professional direction over PO1 staff.
maintaining standards by involvement in the Radiographer training program and the staff
Professional Development program.
ensuring the appropriate use the computerised Radiology Management system.
ensuring that appropriate safe practices are maintained in accordance to the Radiation and
Protection Act 1982.
acting as a resource person in liaising with radiologists, other medical staff, wards and
consulting clinics staff on procedural schedules and relevant procedural information.
performing post mortem radiography as required.
ensuring appropriate procedural documentation is completed and entered into the Radiology
Management and PACS system.
assisting with research and training projects as required.

PERSON SPECIFICATION
1.
ESSENTIAL MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS (those characteristics considered absolutely necessary)
Educational/Vocational Qualifications
Degree in Medical Radiations and a Statement of Accreditation in Diagnostic Radiography from the
Australian Institute of Radiography, or its recognized equivalent.
Hold Level 1 MRI Accreditation, Australian Institute of Radiography.

Experience
Demonstrated experience as an accredited radiographer within a medical imaging department.
Demonstrated experience across broad range of standard MRI examinations:
Knowledge


Knowledge of Regulations pertaining to the Radiation Protection and Control Act, 1982.
Sound knowledge of Occupational Health, Safety & Welfare principles and procedures.
Demonstrated commitment to the principles and practices of Equal Employment Opportunity and
Ethical Conduct, and an understanding of, experience in, and ability to manage to the spirit and
principles of the Premier’s Safety Commitment and the legislative requirements of the Occupational
Health Safety and Welfare Act, utilising AS/NZS 4360 Risk Management, or to an equivalent set of
