Higher Order Questions:
 What is a resume?
 What information is included in a resume?
 Why do I need a resume?
Lesson Activities:
Building Background/Motivation: These students are quickly approaching graduation
and both need and want to find a job and make money. An accurate and functional
resume will help them reach that goal. Prior to this lesson students have already been
taught and practiced filling out a job application. This is the basic information that will
be added to the resume including objective, experiences (both paid and volunteer), skills,
awards, extra-curricular activities. (Hook? Why are students learning this material? What is the realworld connection?)
Presentation: (How is the new material being introduced? Strategies? Scaffolding? Steps in lesson…)
Day 1-Ask the students if they know what a resume is used for and what things should be
included. Using the SMART board project examples of resumes, some good and some
incorrect. The teacher should point out basic standards for effective resumes-typed, neat,
one page, proper format, active voice, honest, etc. as well as common mistakes.
Read and discuss Chapter 7, Lesson 3 from Career Planning (or other available resource).
This lesson presents information about different types of resumes, information to be
included, common action verbs, and resume examples.
Day 2-Students will create a resume using a teacher provided template with the grading
rubric attached. Provide the students with different templates so they can pick the one
that best fits their needs. They will be instructed to input their information into the
template and print it. Students should ask a peer to evaluate their resume.
Student Activities: (Meaningful activities, interactions, structures/strategies, practice and application,
feedback…)
Activities: Students will brainstorm reasons for a resume, write a resume that they can
use in “real life”, and critique their peers’ resumes.
Interactions: Students will brainstorm reasons, critique examples, and evaluate resumes
written by their peers.
Applications: Students will be able to use their resume when applying for a job, college
or a scholarship.
Review and Assessment: (Review of objectives and vocabulary, assess learning, measurement tools…)
Review: “Find It Game” – Vocabulary words will be written on the white board or Smart
board in a random order. Students will be in teams and two will participate at a time up at
the board. The teacher will read the definition of a vocabulary word and the first student
to point at the appropriate word gets a point for their team.
Assessment: Resumes will be graded based on a rubric shown and explained at the
beginning of the lesson.
Interventions/Extensions: (How are you reaching every learner?)
 Students will be given a hard copy of the good and bad examples shown on the
SMART Board.
 Invite members of the community in to sit with students and evaluate their
completed resumes and give constructive feedback as if they were applying for a
job.
