Social 10-1 also deals with the many challenges and opportunities globalization brings to individuals and communities. In this course students are expected to try to see things from the point of view of other people with different backgrounds, values, and experiences. Social 10-1 is centered around one Key Issue that is divided into four Related Issues. Key Issue: To what extent should we embrace globalization? Related Issue #1 Related Issue #2 Related Issue #3 Related Issue #4 To what extent should globalization shape identity? To what extent should contemporary society respond to the legacies of historical globalization? To what extent does globalization contribute to sustainable prosperity for all people? To what extent should I, as a citizen, respond to globalization? _____________________________________________________________ Print Resources Textbook- Exploring Globalization Other resources for Social 10-1 will be the Internet, newspapers, encyclopaedias, television, videos and any other sources that will be appropriate for the situation. _____________________________________________________________ Tutorials 50 minutes long ~ at least one day/week The date and time are listed on the course homepage Attendance and participation are mandatory If you must be absent from a tutorial and you wish to receive complete tutorial marks for your summary, your key parent is required to email me to confirm your absence. You are then required to watch the recording of the tutorial and provide a summary (via email) of the main points covered. To receive credit for attendance, this summary MUST be emailed to me in a timely manner. _____________________________________________________________ Lessons Lessons are posted on a weekly basis, and designed to take about five school days to complete. Each lesson contains reading exercises, course work, online research and weekly assignments. All assignments are due at the end of each weekly lesson (most Fridays). Please check your schedule to ensure that you meet all due dates. Please note: occasionally assignments will be omitted from the lessons to allow time for students to prepare for upcoming exams. For this reason, always carefully read your calendar and announcements, and listen to announcements in archived tutorials. _____________________________________________________________ Assignment Submission Complete all other portions of the lessons and store your work in a binder for future study purposes. (This is necessary for your success!) Please adhere to the Assignment Guidelines when submitting assignments. Follow the Labelling Assignments Guideline when submitting assignments to the dropbox. (Located on homepage in D2L) Failure to do so will result in having your unmarked assignment returned. Plagiarism Is defined as using another author's work without giving them credit in a bibliography or footnote or quoting a source without giving credit in a bibliography or footnote. Working together with other students’ without the teacher’s permission. Plagiarizing (or using someone else's work) could result in your receiving a mark of zero, so be sure to write in your own words. Students who plagiarize (or borrow answers) from one another will receive a mark of zero - no exceptions! Do not lend your answers for others to use and do not copy answers from other students to present as your own. - Contact your teacher if you are not certain if something is plagiarism or not. - Contact your teacher if you require assistance with an assignment. _____________________________________________________________ Due Dates Assignments are due by 4:00pm of the designated due date ~ usually the last day of each week. I am flexible with due dates. However, to ensure success, be very careful not far behind or it will be very difficult to catch up. Assignments submitted more than two weeks overdue may be marked for completion only (50% maximum mark) and no feedback will be provided (mark only) It is your responsibility to refer to the course calendar (Schedule) to verify ALL exam dates and ALL assignment due dates. If you are in doubt, email your teacher. _____________________________________________________________ Extensions Occasionally there may be a time when you require an extension for an assignment. When this happens, please do the following: Email me (cc your key parent) requesting an extension before your assignment is due and you will not be penalized. If an extension has been granted, you will, however, be required to hand your assignment in on the 'new due date' without exception. Marks Updates Marks will be emailed regularly through the RVLS Grade Machine program for students and parents to view. Please read these emails closely to ensure that no unnecessary omissions occur. Also, be sure to check your dropbox folder in D2L for assignment feedback. You may have incorrectly submitted an assignment and will not receive credit until you re-submit. You MUST check your feedback folders to learn this. Assignment feedback is NOT emailed. Please note the following codes that are used to represent certain messages: Inc or Miss - means incomplete (may count for a zero or partial marks toward's student's marks) Exc - refers to excused (does not count as a zero towards student's mark) Evaluation Year's Work - 70% Tutorial attendance, participation and 10% effort Lesson Assignments 30% Unit Exams/Tests/Quizzes 30% Final Exam - 30% Total - 100% Final exams are to be written on-site (in Airdrie), during the designated exam period. An exam schedule will be posted close to the end of the term. It is YOUR responsibility to know when and where your exams are scheduled. Be sure to contact your teacher by the end of May if you do not know your exam schedule. The final exam material covers the entire course. Missing a final exam, without notice or doctor's note, may result in a grade of zero. _____________________________________________________________ Final Tips for Success: Work on your lessons every day. Social Studies 10 is a five credit course. In a traditional school, you would spend approximately 50 minutes per day in the classroom, plus homework. The same sort of hours (at least six per week) are expected here. If you ignore your studies for a couple of days, it is very easy to fall behind, and catching up may appear to be an overwhelming task. Keep an organized binder. Print out all lessons and marked assignments. Make neat notes and keep them with the appropriate lesson. You will have all of these on your hard drive, but it will benefit you to have a back up and have future study notes. Attend tutorials regularly. You will have one Social tutorial per week that is directed toward the review of old concepts and the introduction of new ones. This is also the time for you to clarify any questions that you may have. Your attendance, participation, and effort during these tutorials will make up 10% of your final grade, so please be there! Ask for help as soon as you have a problem. If you do not understand an assignment, email me and I will provide you with a response as soon as I am able. (please do not expect an immediate reply to emails sent outside regular school hours - I am employed on a part time basis; consequently my work hours will be Monday through Thursday) Check your e-mail daily. This is our main form of communication...therefore it is important for both you and your key parent to read and respond to all RVLS emails on a daily basis.
