Teacher of Music
Music and Drama are a joint department under the Performing Arts umbrella. The department is led by
Fay Churchill, Head of Performing Arts, who is currently on maternity leave. Craig Churchill is Acting
Head of Department. There are two Music teachers (full-time) and three Drama Teachers (two full time
and one part time). We are supported by a Technician (part time) and Department Assistant (full time),
who are based in the department. There are two well equipped specialist Music rooms, four soundproof
practice rooms, a small ensemble rehearsal room which is also set up as our ICT suite with a variety of
music software and equipment. We offer a large range of instrumental lessons which are delivered by
our team of peripatetic instrumental tutors. The instrumental tutors work closely with the department
participating in the delivery of the varied extra curricular program where we aim to offer opportunities
for all students.
The Post – we require a 0.8 fte teacher (over 5 days) to teach Music from 23 January 2012.
The post is for a ‘Music Specialist’ and we welcome applications from newly qualified to experienced
teachers. We are looking for a dynamic, enthusiastic and committed teacher to join an active and high
achieving department. The successful applicant will be required to teach KS3 music.
The Music Curriculum
Students are taught in mixed ability groups throughout the age range. In Year 7 students have one
lesson of Music a week. Year 8 students have two lessons a week of Music and Year 9 students have one
lesson a week. Music staff base their lessons on a creative scheme of work through which a variety of
teaching and learning styles have been incorporated.
AQA GCSE Music is taught in mixed ability groups for three lessons a week in Years 10 and 11. Last year
candidates achieved 100% A* - C grade. Students studying GCSE Music are also encouraged to take part
in the school’s performances and productions either as a soloist or as part of an ensemble.
Extra-Curricular
Teachers of Music at Teign are strongly encouraged to help run extra curricular activities. During the
academic year the school offers a range of extra curricular activities to the students throughout the age
range.
We have a successful orchestra, string group, choir, jazz bands and various other small
ensembles all of whom perform in our Christmas, Easter and summer concerts. We also hold a smaller
concert in November to give the GCSE students an opportunity to perform in preparation for their Unit
3 performing paper. The opening of our new ‘Templer Theatre’ will open further opportunities for
music performances.
