GCSE English Enhancement Programme
Pathway 1 – Train the Trainer
This 2 day course will show you how to deliver the course detailed below to tutors in your organisation
who are going to teach GCSE English.
Key features
This course is designed to upskill teachers and trainers of literacy, functional skills or ESOL to
acquire the knowledge and skills to become specialist teachers of GCSE English in the post-16
sector. We recommend that tutors undertaking this course be fully supported throughout the
remainder of the academic year by a mentor and undertake further teaching observations.
Your organisation must have 2 members of staff who can be trained to deliver the course. One needs
to be an experienced GCSE tutor and the other needs to be experienced delivering staff
development.
This train the trainer course is not suitable for any organisations that do not currently deliver GCSE.
Trainees are required to complete GCSE observations and teaching practice.
Course content
Your trainers will deliver upon completion of the 2 day train the trainer course:
GCSE English Assessment of tutor skills
1. Introductory 2 day course covering:
a. GCSE and Functional Skills Assessment (including the new GCSE)
b. Teaching and Learning and Assessment covering understanding and use of spoken
and written language and reading and comprehension
c. Planning for Learning
Independent learning
1. 2 observations of experienced GCSE tutors
2. 1 teaching practice observed by an experienced tutor.
3. Research and evaluation of teaching and learning resources and activities
4. Completion of a reflective journal
5. Online discussions and one to one tutorials using Social Media
Entry requirements for trainee tutors



Level 3 English qualification or above
Or demonstrate competency at level 3
Cert Ed or PGCE or equivalent
