Position Title: Position Status: Classification: Reports to: Woodwind and Brass Instrumental and General Music Teacher Full-time Exempt Director of Arts Department and Division Head Position Purpose Develop the woodwind and brass component of the instrumental program including Lower School and Middle School ensembles while providing musical leadership to members of the Upper School Jazz Ensemble. In addition, teach Middle School General Music courses using and expanding on existing curriculum. Essential Functions Directs the Upper School Jazz Ensemble and differentiates learning for students with advanced, intermediate and developing skills. Contributes to a sequential instrumental program in all divisions by encouraging performance and providing enrichment opportunities. Leads groups in regular and special performances for school program, community activities and festivals. Conducts group rehearsals and instructs and coaches members on their individual parts, in the fundamentals of musicianship, and ensemble performance. Initiates, facilitates, and moderates classroom activities. Evaluates students’ technical skills. Plans daily classroom work based on curriculum requirements. Interacts well with students to recruit them to the music program. Maintains student attendance records, grades, and written feedback on graded assignments. Collaborates with Arts’ teachers and administrators in the development, evaluation, and revision of the instrumental and general music program. Maintains contact with students and parents with regular communication and regularly scheduled evaluations. Participates in weekly community and school service programs and weekly activities program. Attends weekly grade-level team meetings, faculty meetings, department and program meetings, open houses, conferences, and events as required. Performs additional faculty duties as assigned, such as substitute teaching, lunch and snack duties, recess monitoring and dismissals as required. Qualifications A minimum of two years of personal conducting experience in secondary school, college or a community jazz setting or other relevant experience. Bachelor’s degree (BA or BM) or post graduate work in music or music education. Demonstrated skills as a musician and teacher. Arranging and digital notation experience. Broad appreciation of musical style experientially valid for school age children. Flexibility and creativity in crafting appropriate challenges for a range of abilities within each ensemble and in the general music classroom. Experience with upkeep of instruments. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Physical Requirements and Work Environment Must be able to work effectively in a demanding environment where deadlines, unexpected student issues, and varying challenges compete for your attention. Must be able to work actively around the classroom for extended periods of time. Must be able to work primarily in a traditional climate controlled office environment. Must be able to enjoy the convenience of an urban environment that maintains close contact with its natural environment.
