MEDIA RELEASE January 9, 2008 For Immediate Release Niagara College Vice-Chair awarded Order of Canada Michael D. Scott honoured for business achievement, contributions to scouting Michael D. Scott, Vice Chair of the Niagara College Board of Governors, is among the distinguished Canadians who were recently appointed to the Order of Canada, the country’s highest honour for lifetime achievement. Mr. Scott’s appointment as a Member of the Order of Canada was announced December 28, 2007, by Her Excellency the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean, Governor General of Canada. “Mike Scott is a natural leader whose life exemplifies good citizenship,” said Jim Ryan, Chair of the Niagara College Board of Governors. “We’re very pleased that Mike has been recognized as an outstanding Canadian.” Mr. Scott, who currently resides in Sooke, B.C., has been a member of the College’s Board of Governors for five years. He is a former President and Chief Executive Officer of PBB Global Logistics and is currently the Chairman of the World Freight Alliance, a network of international freight forwarders with 46 members in 40 countries. In the Fall of 2000 Mr. Scott organized and led the first trade mission ever organized by a private company to China. Mr. Scott again led trade missions to China in 2001 and 2002. In recognition of his efforts to foster trade between China and Canada Mr. Scott was made an Honourary Professor of Guanxi University in April 2001. He is the first Canadian to receive this honour. Mr. Scott is actively involved with Scouts Canada where he has been a youth leader for almost 30 years. He continues to serve on the Board of Governors where he is the Past Chief Commissioner for Canada. In 2006 Mr. Scott was awarded the Silver Wolf, Scouting’s highest decoration for service to the organization. Mr. Scott is also the Honourary-Colonel of The Hastings & Prince Edward Regiment of the Canadian Armed Forces Reserve. Mr. Scott’s Order of Canada citation reads: “For his contributions as a business leader in the logistics industry, and for his dedicated service to and support of the Scouting movement in Canada.” He will receive the Order of Canada insignia at a ceremony later this year. The Order of Canada was established in 1967 to recognize outstanding achievement and service in various fields of human endeavour. It is Canada’s highest honour for lifetime achievement. Appointments are made on the recommendation of an advisory council, chaired by the Chief Justice of Canada.
