What happens at the clinic?
On arrival at the clinic please report to the Receptionist who will take your child’s details.
Please inform the receptionist if your child suffers from eczema or any other skin condition.
A nurse or carer will, with your permission, apply a local anaesthetic cream to numb the area where the blood will be taken from.
Occasionally there may be a reaction to the cram. The skin where the cream has been applied may become read, itchy and puffy.
It takes approximately 30 minutes for the cream to numb the area. This means that you will have to stay in the clinic area for this time. There is a play area and other facilities to help you and your child pass the time.
Once the cream has been removed the blood test will be taken and you will be encouraged to stay with your child while the nurse takes the blood test.
A carer will stay with you to help divert your child’s attention and discourage him/her from watching the test being done.
Once the blood test has been done you will be able to leave.
Blood test results
It takes approximately 1 – 2 weeks before the result of most blood tests are known. Some results may take longer. The blood results are sent directly to the doctor who referred your child.
Please do not telephone the paediatric out patient clinic or paediatric ward as they will not have the results.
