SCREENER /GRADER JOB DESCRIPTION

This is a permanent post subject to satisfactory completion of a
3 month probationary period
Reports to:
Local Team Leader
Responsible to:
Directors MEDICAL IMAGING UK Ltd
Liaises with:
Patients, medical professionals, screening team, line managers,
IT/technical peers
Hours of work:
Full-time, nominally 36.25 hours per week. The employee’s
normal working hours may be undertaken flexibly between 8.00 a.m.
and 6.00 p.m. Monday to Friday with a 45 minute break for lunch at
a time convenient to the employer.
Starting salary:
Salary band 4 (currently £18,838 per annum)
Payment:
Monthly by direct credit transfer
Period of notice:
Two months notice both parties
Medical report:
The appointment may be subject to satisfactory health
clearance and Criminal Record Bureau checks.
Annual leave:
25 days plus relevant public holidays based on 5 day working
week. Compulsory shutdown period of 3-5 days between
Christmas and New Year forms part of the annual allowance.

Under no circumstances, either during or after the end of your
employment (however it is terminated) may you divulge any
unauthorised person confidential information relating to
Medical Imaging. This includes but is not limited to,
information covering patients, individual staff records,
industrial relations, financial affairs, contract terms and prices
or business forecasts. All such information must be treated as
confidential; Breach of this confidence may result in immediate
dismissal. Each individual must comply with information on
security and confidentiality issues including the Data
Protection Act 1998, the principles of Caldecott and NHS
confidentiality regulations.

Clinical Governance: Staff are expected to provide patients with timely and effective
care. Treatment and direct/indirect support must be based on
best practice. Everyone is responsible for this and all Medical
Imaging employees are an important part in achieving this.

instructed. Email must not be used to transmit person

premises without advice concerning additional document
protection.

The aim of Medical Imaging is to provide patients and clients
with the best possible care and services. In order to meet this
aim, all our staff are required at all times to put the patient and
client first and do their utmost to meet their requests and needs
courteously and efficiently. In order that staff understand the
principles of customer care and the effects on their particular
post and service, full training will be given.
Infection Control:
All healthcare workers have an overriding duty of care to
patients and are expected to comply fully with best practice
standards. You have a responsibility to comply with Medical
Imaging policies for personal and patients safety and for
prevention of healthcare associated infection (HCAI).

Professional overview:
1. To provide a safe and secure Diabetic Retinopathy Screening Service to the diabetic
population, according to National Screening Committee guidelines in the role of
Screener/Grader.
2. To operate in accordance with all company policies and procedures.
3. To undertake screening and grading tasks as the teams needs require.
4. To ensure that no person receives less favourable treatment than another on the

Principal duties and responsibilities:
Clinical:
1. To contribute to the patient pathway through the screening process, ensuring that
all patients receive appropriate screening and timely follow up appointments
according to National Programme Screening Targets External Quality Assurance
performance indicators where applicable. To include: Greeting the patient and answering any questions the patient may ask as fully
as possible, within your level of competence and reassuring the patient if they
have any concerns. Also provide information about diabetic eye disease and
diabetic eye screening.
Obtaining consent from the patient prior to screening.
Measuring and recording visual acuity in accordance with the agreed
protocol.
Administering drops to dilate the patient’s pupil in accordance with the
agreed protocol.
Obtaining images of suitable clarity of each eye using a fundus camera and
digital imaging system.
Providing patient education and information relating to the remainder of the
screening pathway.
To ensure the results are Primary graded and the final images produced are
adequate in quality, ensuring NSC standards are complied with in obtaining
the final result.
To operate in accordance with Medical Imaging UK Ltd policies, procedures
and protocols.
Be prepared to undertake screening work outside of normal weekday hours
and where screening is necessary in a non-CCG environment always ensuring
you are jointly accompanied by a colleague.
Be prepared to undertake supporting cover at any location that may require
help in times of need.
To undertake basic maintenance and testing of equipment to provide
optimum service quality.
To ensure that the screening equipment is moved safely and securely
according to the clinic rota.
To assist with the maintaining of an accurate disease register on the compliant
Orion/Digital Healthcare screening software
To assist in the improvement, expansion and reform of the local retinal
screening service as required
To support the training of new screening staff as necessary to facilitate any
expansion of the service that may be planned.

Liaising with Ophthalmology/Diabetology Department staff and General
Practice based staff as required.
Participating in audit and quality control procedures.
To ensure all images and imaging data are collated and archived on a regular
and prompt basis, and downloaded to the local server in a timely and secure
manner.
To participate in initiatives to reduce the non-attendance rate in the Retinal
Screening Service.
Ensure that self and all staff are fully aware of the confidentiality of patient
records and appropriate data protection legislation.
Be aware of and actively participate in regular Health and Safety training, risk
assessment, and incident recording.
Participate and contribute to the Company Newsletter and encourage
communication with other satellite units in other geographic locations
Organisational:
1. Professional representation of Medical Imaging UK Ltd services at all times and to
relevant groups and at recognised events
2. Screener/Graders are expected to be flexible in their approach to the changing
needs of the local service and the company as a whole
3. To participate in any changes to the service specification as required to maintain an
effective service that meets National Screening Committee (NSC) standards
Training, education and research:
All staff undertake a period of probation and compulsory learning (vocational learning
under mentorship of experienced staff and undertake a competency assessment) in order
to gain the necessary skills to fulfil the job description.
Following the period of competency assessment, all staff will be required to complete the
National Certificate in Diabetic Retinopathy Screening.
Beyond certification all staff will be encouraged and supported to continually develop
their skills portfolio and career as opportunities permit.
Where opportunities permit, Medical Imaging also offers opportunities to provide other
functions outside of their job description where additional “specialist” remuneration may
be offered.
part of your training and continuous learning, the post-holder will be expected to
attend appropriate accreditation courses and further training in order to fulfill the role and
develop their career. The post holder will attend meetings, seminars, workshops,
conferences and complete on line training courses as required. All screening staff are
required to be registered with the British Association of Retinal Screeners and the
Ophthalmic Imaging Association.
As
It is expected that the post holder will contribute directly and indirectly to the
development of the company and its portfolio through research or short term projects as
and when identified.

All Screener/Grader staff will be encouraged to develop their career pathway and become
involved in more advanced forms of Ophthalmic Imaging where opportunities arise.
Following successful training in these specialties the individual may ultimately participate
in advance qualification such as the Foundation Degree in Ophthalmic Science ensuring a
steady enhancement of career opportunities within our company.
Desirable attributes:
1. The post holder must be IT literate – word processing, spreadsheets etc
2. They will need to show initiative and the ability to prioritise tasks and to use
problem-solving skills.
