8th to 9th Grade Transition Timeline January, 2008 Holland High School (HHS) Counselors meet with 8th grade core teachers and counselors to discuss course offerings, requirements, and optimal 9th grade student placements. January 17 (Thursday) HHS Counselors meet in classes with all East 8th graders to discuss transition to high school and classes. Students choose electives. January 23 (Wednesday) HHS Counselors meet in classes with all West 8th graders to discuss transition to high school and classes. Students choose electives. Parent letter, including high school core class recommendations and student elective choices is prepared using 8th grade teacher recommendations and standardized test scores. Letters will be distributed at the 9th Grade Orientation and Showcase on February 21. Thursday, February 21 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. - 8th grade parent/student meeting regarding orientation to 9th grade (Performing Arts Center). Please arrive early so that we may distribute parent letter containing students’ personalized class placements! 7:30 – 8:30 p.m. - Holland High School Showcase in the Dutch Dome! Talk with club sponsors, athletics and activities team members. 8:00 – 8:30 p.m. - Informational meeting regarding the Holland High School honors and Advanced Placement curriculum. February 21 – April 3 Students and/or parents may contact HHS counselors with any core or elective course selection questions or concerns. March 31 – April 3 Middle school parent/teacher conferences. Information and forms concerning honors English and AP entrance writing sample and “test out” information will be distributed with report cards. (Those unable to attend will receive this information in the mail.) Week of April 21: Honors English and AP entrance writing sample and “test out” procedures conducted at the middle school. May 1 (Thursday) East 8th grade tour of Holland High School. May 2 (Friday) West 8th grade tour of Holland High School.
