Dear Student
Welcome to the Day Surgery Unit within Victoria and Queen Margaret Hospitals.
Your placement with us will be predominately in the Victoria Hospital with visits to
Queen Margaret to observe specialist surgery and post operative care. This will be
explained at the start of placement. Please phone the unit for enquiries regarding off
duty or to arrange an informal visit. The numbers are 01592 648020 or 01383 627010.
On the first day of placement you will report to the Day Surgery Unit in Victoria
Hospital, Kirkcaldy at 9am.

The Day Surgery team is committed to providing the optimum learning environment
for student nurses and throughout your placement we would welcome any comments
and suggestions to improve our service.
You will be allocated a mentor and co-mentor on arrival to our unit who will support
and facilitate your learning. Every effort will be made to ensure that you work with
your mentor or co- mentor the required amount of time throughout your placement but
to ensure your experience is as varied as possible, you will work as a member of the
team.
You will wear uniform on placement and we ask that you bring your assessment
documents with you on the first day and ensure that it is accessible to your mentor.
At the end of your placement, you will be asked to complete an evaluation
questionnaire. This helps staff to audit the effectiveness of the learning environment
provided by them for students.
