Spelling Bee: (Grades 4-5) It is the nation's largest and longest-running educational promotion,
administered on a not-for-profit basis by The E.W. Scripps Company and local spelling bee
sponsors. Students will compete in a school-level competition, crowning one winner who will

Geography Bee: (Grades 4-5) This is hosted by National Geographic. The contest is designed
to encourage and spark student interest in geography, and increase public awareness about
geography. Students in grades four through eight are eligible for this entertaining and
challenging test of geographic knowledge. It is untimed. A medal will be given to the one
school winner, and a qualifying test then will be administered to the school winner. This test
determines the top scoring one hundred students in each state who are invited to compete at the

Letters About Literature: (Grades 4-5) This is a writing contest sponsored by the Center for
the Book in the Library of Congress in cooperation with the Illinois Center for the Book,
Illinois State Library and the Illinois Secretary of State and State Librarian, Jesse White.
Students have to write a persuasive letter to an author whose work (either fiction or nonfiction)

Continental Math League: (Grades 2-5) All CML contests are designed to both maximize
student opportunities to participate and to improve their problem solving capabilities. Students
will be participating with other students on the same grade level from schools all over the
United States. Each contest consists of six questions. There is a 30 minute time limit per
contest. Questions are different for each grade level. Website:

Computer Science League: (Grades 3-5) This contest focuses on the “unplugged” activities;
questions that do not require any specific computer science knowledge. Three sets of
“programming” and algorithmic puzzles in a paper test format. Website:

Math Olympiad: (Grades 4-5) These are math problem solving contests designed to stimulate
enthusiasm and a love for Mathematics, to introduce important Mathematical concepts, to teach
major strategies for problem solving, to develop Mathematical flexibility in solving problems,
to strengthen Mathematical intuition, to foster Mathematical creativity and ingenuity and to
provide for the satisfaction, joy, and thrill of meeting challenges. All grade levels take the same

National Language Arts League: (Grades 2-5) Multiple choice questions appropriate to each
grade level. All of the tests are based on the following topics: spelling, vocabulary, reading
comprehension, analogies, and grammar. Each contest has a time limit of 35 minutes and the

Noetic Learning Math Competion (NLMC): (Grades 2-5) The Noetic Learning Math
Contest is a biannual math challenge. The goal of the competition is to encourage young
students' interest in math, to develop their problem solving skills, and to inspire them to excel in
math. Noetic Learning provides problems that challenge students to think creatively and to
apply problem solving skills. During the contest, students are given 45 minutes to solve 20
problems that can cover a broad range of mathematics skills taught in school. Website:

National Geography League: (Grades 2-5) This contest reflects the main themes of
Geography and are appropriate to each grade level. Each contest is 35 minutes in length and
contains 35-40 questions, depending on the grade level. Website:

National Current Events League: (Grades 4-5) (Grades 2-5)Each meet contest will be based
on current events in four different time frames. Questions will be selected from the following
areas and will be appropriate to the individual grade level involved: General News, Arts &
Entertainment, Science & Health, Business & Finance, and Sports. Each meet consists of 30
multiple-choice questions and has a time limit of 25 minutes. Website:

National Science League: (Grades 2-5) Contest consists of multiple choice questions which
comprise each contest area, based on factual knowledge as well as students’ understanding of
scientific processes. Contests are Life Science, Physical Science, General Science, Earth
Science, Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Time limit for each contest is 35 minutes and the

National Social Studies League: (Grades 2-5) Questions are based on topics in American
Studies, Geography of the United States and United States Government appropriate to each
grade level. Questions are multiple choice and have a limit of 35 minutes. The number of

Word Masters: (Grades 3-5) This is a vocabulary competition based on completing analogies.

Students may sign up for any of the competitions, according to their current 2015-2016 grade
level. *If you have a 1st grader who is interested in competing at the 2nd grade level, please
contact Mrs. Christianson.
When registration forms are received and study materials are available, they will be given to
each participant. All contests are written in English.
