Missing Child Policy
(Senior & Junior Schools)
Reviewed July 2015
The Board of Directors formally adopted this policy with the intention that it is reviewed annually.
This Missing Children Policy applies to all of the School stakeholders, which includes all those
involved in the Early Years Foundation Stage and this is available on the request of the parents of
prospective and present pupil.
There will be regular checks (including registrations) to see children are in School, but they may
leave the School accompanied by an adult. At weekends (for Boarding children) there will be a roll
call at specific times. During the week, roll calls will not be necessary because at meals and
bedtimes, checking is part of the domestic routine. Children who are away from School with
parents, friends or a teacher will be marked absent on the 'Fire List' by the front door - duty staff
will be aware of this list.
Should a child not be present when expected to be in School, members of staff must:
.
.
.
.
.
inform other members of staff (resident, matrons, duty)
check with peer groups as to last known whereabouts
double check absentee list in consultation with the School Secretary
arrange a thorough and speedy search of the buildings and grounds
alert the Head or designated deputy that a child is missing
if the Head or designated Deputy is satisfied that the child is not present after searches
(members of staff to search the locality) in and around the School, the local Police will be
advised on return, establish the cause for absence and deal with the matter in the most
appropriate way. This may include asking assistance of the Police. The child's parents will
be informed and steps may be needed to instruct and educate other pupils on the need for
good sense with regard to staying on the premises.
