The children are really enjoying learning about different topics through our themed curriculum. It would be welcomed if parents could also help their children to find out about these topics at home. In order to enhance learning the government requires us to set homework. At Rokeby Park School we value our partnership with parents and so your help in supporting the following homework strategies would be very much appreciated: Reading books will be sent home every night and changed at least twice a week. Please listen to your child read as often as possible and talk to them about the story. Feel free to write any comments you may wish to make in the enclosed reading diary. Also it would be helpful if you could note down the last page that you heard your child read. If your child reads other texts at home such as, the newspaper or a book of their own you can also write this into their reading record to show us the range of texts they are reading at home. The children will be listened to read by Miss Hall, Mrs Featherstone, Miss Ball or Mrs Flynn every week either one to one or during a Guided Reading session. When listened to on a one to one basis a note will be made in your child’s reading record. Guided Reading – Your child will be heard read every week by Miss Hall, Mrs Featherstone, Miss Ball or Mrs Flynn. However a record of this is kept in school to be used for assessment purposes and is not noted in their home reading records. Spellings will usually be sent home each Thursday, based upon words the children have been learning during their phonics sessions that week. Please follow the ‘Look, Say, Cover, Write, Check’ method of learning. This is a very successful way to help your child remember how to spell the words. Remember that your child may look at the words as often as he/she needs to. Numeracy homework will be sent home each Thursday (once the children have settled into their new class). The homework will be collected the following Tuesday, when we will spend time going through what the children have done and any problems they experienced. Such homework will be linked to work we have been doing within the classroom and so it is hoped that it will help consolidate prior learning. However, your child may still require some help to complete his / her work. Should you have any questions about the work set, please do not hesitate to contact the school. We would also like to take this opportunity to outline the school’s policy on PE kits. The school requires that, for indoor PE, all children wear a plain white t-shirt, and plain black shorts. For outdoor work during colder weather pupils should wear a tracksuit (or jogging bottoms and a sweatshirt) and trainers. We will normally have PE on a Tuesday afternoon. We look forward to working with you to help your child meet his / her full potential. We thank you for your past help and for your support in the future. If you have any questions, queries or concerns please do not hesitate to contact us. Best wishes Miss Hall, Mrs Featherstone, Miss Ball and Mrs Flynn Staff Members in your child’s class.
