About the Staff
Elizabeth Drake - Headteacher
I qualified as a post-graduate teacher for pupils with learning difficulties in 1981.
Between 1981 and 1993 I worked in two schools for pupils with moderate learning
difficulties, gaining senior teacher status and taking one year out of teaching on
maternity leave. I was appointed Deputy Headteacher in a school for pupils with
severe and profound learning difficulties in 1993 and became involved in many
Essex Special Schools Initiatives over the next five years. During this time I was
seconded to two Essex special schools as acting Headteacher. I was appointed
Headteacher of Kingswode Hoe School in January 1999. My main subject interests
include speech and language development and geography. I am also interested in
school self-evaluation. In September 2002, I was seconded to work on the ‘MLD
Outreach’ project for the Local Education Authority and continue to support
Outreach Development with five special school headteachers. More recently I have
become involved with Initial Teacher Training as part of the steering group for the
Colchester Teaching School. I am a director of the Special School Trust working
with the Local Authority to develop special school provision across the county.
John Eady - Deputy Headteacher
I have been Deputy Headteacher at Kingswode Hoe School since January 2000 and I
love the daily challenge of working in such a positive and caring environment. Prior
to coming to Kingswode Hoe School I taught in a number of schools co-ordinating
special needs and teaching a range of subjects. Before entering teaching I worked
in local government. Outside of school my interests are music, theatre and trying
to keep fit. I am currently co-ordinator for Music and Drama.
Keeley Shelton - Key Stage 1 & 2 Leader
I qualified as a primary teacher in 1998 and worked in mainstream schools in East
London where I specialised in leading science throughout key stage 1 and key stage
2.
I worked with children with behaviour and emotional difficulties for four years. I
was invited to move to a school to raise attainment in science. I taught children
who had English as an additional language and I became deputy headteacher.
I moved to Colchester five years ago and worked as a supply teacher at Prettygate
Infant and Junior School. I started work at Kingswode Hoe in November 2010. I
teach in the primary part of the school, which I enjoy very much.
Alice Constantine – Assistant Headteacher & Key Stage 3 Leader
I joined the staff at Kingswode Hoe in September 2012. After working with children
with autism whilst studying for a degree in Drama & Theatre Studies, I knew I
wanted to teach and to work with young people with special needs. I have worked
in different secondary schools across Essex, based in Clacton for nine years, most
recently as Assistant Vice Principal at Clacton Coastal Academy. I thoroughly enjoy
working with the vibrant staff team and students at Kingswode Hoe. I teach
English, Drama and Art, all of which have been my favourite subjects since primary
school. Other passions include reading, travelling, going to the cinema and
theatre, visiting antique shops and places of historical interest as well as spending
valuable time with friends and family.
11
Jude Jelly – Assistant Headteacher & Key Stage 4 Leader/Outreach
After College I worked in an architect’s department (GLC), then moved to St
Peter’s Hospital (medical records) – Covent Garden. After which I became a special
needs and art teacher in mainstream secondary.
I have been a SENCo in two mainstream secondary schools in Colchester before I
moved to Market Field School (Deputy Head).
Passions (well some of them!) art, outdoor education, special education aid
inclusive practices.
Sue Beasant
I started teaching in 1999 for Mencap “Learning for Work” project as work skills
tutor. From this post I moved on to teach at West Suffolk College. I qualified as a
school teacher whilst working as an ICT co-ordinator at the Endeavour School.
When I did my teacher training I gained experience of mainstream secondary and
worked for two years at Hedingham School as an ICT teacher. I started at
Kingswode Hoe in September 2008. I am ICT Co-ordinator and year 10 tutor.
Helen Davey
I qualified as a teacher in 2000 and have since worked in a mainstream local school
in the infant classes. I thoroughly enjoy a daily task of watching children learn and
develop. I like teaching all subjects and enjoy being creative in my teaching.
Outside of school I like to relax on holiday, go shopping and listen to music.
Helen Dennis
I have been teaching since 1991, spending seven and a half years teaching
Reception and Year 1 pupils at Maylandsea County Primary School before training
to be a teacher of the deaf at Hertfordshire University. I taught deaf children aged
between 6 months and 16 years for two years in Redbridge, followed by mixed
Special Needs including Autism for two and a half years at the Hayward School in
Chelmsford.
Yvonne Frost
After leaving Braintree Art College I served in the WRAF for 3 years. I then put my
art skills to use as a Publicity Officer for a large international corporation.
Whilst raising my family I studied Art and Design at Suffolk University College. I
then worked in A & E at Colchester General Hospital whilst obtaining a BA (hons) in
History at Essex University.
Before undertaking a PGCE in History and Citizenship at Anglia Ruskin University, I
spent a year working in the pupil support base at Sir Charles Lucas where my
interest in ASD and child mental health began.
I have since taught History and Citizenship (including GCSE Citizenship with
Humanities) to KS 3 and 4 pupils in three mainstream secondary schools.
Since joining Kingswode Hoe at Christmas 2007 I have taught pupils from primary
to year 9.
I am currently a year 7 tutor with subject responsibility for PSHE and Citizenship. I
also teach English, Art and Drama.
I love all things crafty including jewellery making, crochet and painting.
12
Nicky Hetherston
I started at Kingswode Hoe as a learning support assistant in 2003. Before that I
had worked for three years with Social Services.
I completed my BSC Honours degree in Health and Social Studies and embarked on
the Graduate Teacher training programme. I started teaching Blue Class (years 4
and 5) in September 2007. I am currently subject leader for RE. My free time
activities include reading, theatre and walking my black labrador Harvey.
Hannah Hill
I qualified as a drama specialist with primary education studies in 2006 and worked
in different schools in Essex. It was during time at Harwich Primary School I
discovered my enjoyment of teaching children with special educational needs. I
moved to Nottinghamshire and worked in a learning centre for all ages, as key
stage two co ordinator for pupils with SEN. I have since moved back to Essex and
was appointed as maths co ordinator at Kingswode Hoe School in January 2014. I
love drama and the theatre and reading but most of my free time is spent
entertaining my own children.
Liz Lakin
After qualifying in 1987, I began teaching in an infant school in Braintree. I taught
Year 1 and Reception classes there for just over three years. I moved to Kingswode
Hoe School in January 1991 teaching Reception and Year 1/2 children until January
2001 when I took adoption leave. I now work part time and I am the link teacher
for Speech and Language Therapy with the Local Health Authority provider.
Diane Levitt
I came into teaching in 2002 following a successful career in the jewellery trade.
Before joining Kingswode Hoe School in January 2014, my experiences were in
mainstream schools, where my resposabilities included Head of Year, Susstainable
School Co-ordinator and Co-ordinator for Technology.
I started at Kingswode Hoe in January 2014. I am Subject Leader for Technology,
and a Year 10 Tutor.
When I am not teaching, my interests return to my jewellery and silversmithing
roots and you can find me in my workshops creating and making.
Terry Logan
I joined Kingswode Hoe School in September 2011 having successfully passed the
GTP training programme at a primary school in Northampton. Prior to this I gained
three years invaluable experience at a special needs school also based in
Northampton.
As head of PE at Kingswode Hoe, I am able to fulfil one of my greatest passions,
being involved in all things sporty!
Outside of school I am a keen runner, footballer, pianist and guitarist. I am also an
avid follower of my favourite football team Glasgow Celtic as well as being a huge
boxing aficionado!
Joanne Maguire
My teaching experience has included Primary, Secondary and Special School
settings.
I qualified as a Teacher of the Deaf at Hertfordshire University and I am also a
trained Dyslexia Teacher.
I previously taught at Kingswode Hoe in 1999 for 1 year, on a temporary contract. I
enjoyed the experience so much I returned in September 2007.
My interests are yoga and walking my dogs.
13
Richard Smith
I have been associated with Kingswode Hoe School since 1999 when I was accepted
onto a college placement.
I began teaching in January 2004 after passing the GTP. I am currently co-ordinator
for science.
I am extremely sporty in my spare time, where I usually find myself on a
badminton or tennis court. I play for a local Sunday league football team and it is
common knowledge that I am a huge Manchester United fan.
Outreach
Kingswode Hoe runs an outreach centre that aims to build up links with other
schools in the Colchester area. The outreach centre offers advice and
support to local mainstream schools as well as establishing links to provide
opportunities for children at Kingswode Hoe to work alongside children from
other schools.
This is part of our drive to maximise the social inclusion of pupils from
Kingswode Hoe into the local community.
Admission
Essex County Council is the admitting authority for the school. All pupils on roll
have a Statement of Special Educational Needs, with Learning the main area of
need. They will have been placed in the school by the local Special Education
Needs or the Children with Additional Needs (SENCAN) teams.
The school has a uniform, which we expect all pupils to wear. Each Key Stage
wears a different colour sweatshirt – details are in the new pupil pack.
Attendance
All pupils are expected to attend school every day, unless they are unwell. Please
note: we do not have a designated sickbay or medical staff in school. Pupils
who arrive unfit for school will be sent home.
We have a policy of ‘first day contact’ and parents will be contacted about a
child’s absence if notification or a telephone call is not received before 9.30am.
Please try to telephone the school reception before 8.50am on the first day and
leave the reason for your child’s absence. In addition please notify the school of
advance absence via the home school diary.
It is unsatisfactory for pupils to be taken out of school during term time for family
holidays. Should this be unavoidable, a form should be completed beforehand
requesting time out of school, available from the school office. The school may
then grant this absence, to a maximum of 10 school days.
Holidays in term time without permission
The Education (Pupil Registration) (England) Regulations 2006 make provision for
holidays in term-time only with the permission of the head teacher. The
regulations state that holidays in term time should only be authorised under
special circumstances and that save under exceptional circumstances, no more
14
than 10 school days should be authorised for a holiday. It will be at the head
teachers discretion to authorise a holiday.
Parents may be issued with a penalty notice if a holiday is taken without
permission.
Curriculum
At Kingswode Hoe School we aim to provide your child with a broad and balanced
education, including GCSE in some subjects, which encompasses the National
Curriculum but also gives equal importance to his or her individual needs as set out
in the Statement of Special Education Needs. All subjects are studied, including a
modern foreign language in KS3. In KS4, pupils undertake a work related
curriculum, which includes college links, examination work, work experience and
careers and citizenship education, so that they are well prepared for experiences
post 16.
In Key Stage 2, emphasis is placed on Personal, Social and Health Education, with
work on social skills, play skills and looking after yourself. The pupils based in the
primary class work on a cross-curricula theme basis.
Throughout the school we have a particularly strong sporting ethos. The school has
a large tennis court area, playing field, and a gymnasium. A range of sports is
played through the school year, with equal emphasis on individual skills and team
games. Kingswode Hoe School is a member of MESSA (Mid Essex Special Schools
Association) and has a variety of trophies gained from taking part in these interschools competitions.
Homework
The school has a clear homework policy, which is available in the new pupil pack.
Out of School Activities
To enhance social and learning opportunities, many members of staff offer to run
school clubs during the lunch break. These include art club, dance club, games
club, ICT club, and singing club. These activities change periodically so please
check with staff for updates.
Our after school and holiday clubs are run by ‘Interact’ separately from the school.
Assessing Pupils
Teachers are constantly assessing your child’s progress. All pupils have Individual
Education Plans, which are reviewed termly. These contribute to the annual
review of statement, which in turn, helps guide the next IEP cycle. Some pupils
may also have IBPs – Individual Behaviour Plans. All subjects have informal
assessment tasks, which are carried out by teachers throughout the year. Formal
reading tests are carried out twice a year. Formal assessment takes place in the
summer term and end-of-year reports are then sent home for your information.
The school uses the B2 system to assess core subjects.
In Year 6 pupils sit National Standard Attainment Tasks (SATS) where appropriate.
Here assessment will be through teacher assessment of tasks and for some pupils,
formal tests. Results are published annually.
In Year 11 pupils can take accredited courses in English, Maths, Science, ICT,
Sports Leader, Art and The Arts. We are currently able to offer Art and maths at
GCSE level for those pupils for which it is appropriate.
15
Meeting your Child’s Teachers
Although teachers are available for consultation by appointment at any time in the
year, there are three formal parent-teacher meetings per year. One of these will
be the annual review meeting, with one consultation meeting in the summer term
and one general meeting in the autumn term. Parents can liaise daily with
teachers through the Home-School diary.
Careers Education
There is a carefully tailored careers education programme, which starts in Year 9.
Year 11 pupils have access to a ????? Personal Adviser. We provide work experience
for all our students during Years 10 and 11 and help students prepare for the next
stage in their learning through workplace and college visits.
Charging and Remissions Policy
In line with the 1988 Education Act the school has its own policy statement on this
issue, which is available from the school on request.
Community Links
Kingswode Hoe School has forged many links with the local community.
Our two ‘Variety Club’ minibuses are in constant use for either1/2 day or day trips
into the local community and weeklong residential experiences. Throughout the
year, pupils have opportunities to take part in residential trips including Norfolk,
Suffolk and the Lake District. These are of great value to pupils, and members of
staff give freely of their time, unpaid, to organise and run them.
Friends of Kingswode Hoe
We are fortunate to have an active and supportive fund raising parent-teacher
association (FOKHS). As our pupils come from a very wide catchment area, it is
important that many parents should become actively involved in the school. This
friendly group meet regularly to help organise and run fund-raising social events.
There are many fundraising activities over the year. Recently these have included
a Halloween Disco, a Christmas Trolley Raffle and Sports Day refreshments. During
the past few years, money raised has been put towards a new mini-bus and each
year the FOKHS pay for the mini-bus insurance. The association is always on the
lookout for new ideas, new talents and new members!
School Meals
The school has its own kitchen where tasty hot cooked food is provided. Pupils may
also bring packed lunches. Fresh, locally sourced meat and vegetables are used in
all menus. Menus are sent home for parents to see and in September the cost of a
child’s meal will be £1.85 for primary pupils and £2.15 for others, £2.50 for an
adult. Meals must be ordered and paid for in advance, preferably on Mondays.
Pupils arriving at school after 10am cannot order a meal for that day.
Year 11 pupils’ meals are only provided if payment has been received - either
in advance or on the day a meal is required. This approach enhances their
16
independence, part of the preparation for their next step in life. Parental support
with Year 11 pupil social and self reliance skills is appreciated.
Meals are eaten in our separate school dining room, supervised by classroom
support staff.
Equal Opportunities
Kingswode Hoe School is committed to promoting understanding of the principles
and practices of equality and justice. We aim to equip children with an awareness
of our diverse society and to appreciate the value of difference.
Every member of Kingswode Hoe School is regarded as of equal worth and
importance, irrespective of his or her creed, culture, class, race, gender, sexuality
and, or disability.

speak to the Headteacher.
The Governing Body is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of
children and young people, and expects all staff and volunteers to share this
