Teams are selected to play 10 games from mid-March to May. There is practice daily after school until 5:00 P.M.

9 th Grade Baseball (Spring)

The 9 th

grade girls’ basketball program runs from early December until late February. We stress commitment, good attitude and hard work. Besides after school practices, there are also

Saturday practices. We play about 16 games against various local high schools.

9 th Grade Bowling (Winter)

Coach: Mr. Stadnycki

9 th

grade students are part of the high school team. Both boys and girls are eligible to participate.

Practice begins in early December and the season ends in February.

Boys’ Quartet

Advisor: Ms. Smith

Open to any 7 th

, 8 th

or 9 th

grade boy who is currently in a performing music group at school

(chorus, band, or orchestra). This group consists of only 4 boys who are selected by audition.

This is a traveling performance group. The Boys’ Quartet practices at the same time as the Jazz

Choir.

Ceramics Club

Advisor: Mrs. Floyd

Students design and produce 3-dimensional pieces in clay. Their work is Bisque-fired, glazed and glaze-fired. Students from all grades are welcome and no prior experience is necessary.

Space is limited.

Chamber Ensembles

Advisor: Ms. Milbourne

All 7 th , 8 th and 9 th grade orchestra members are eligible to audition for one of these select ensembles. Chamber groups perform in the community as well as school concerts.

Cheerleading (Fall and Winter)

Coaches: Ms. Johnson and Mrs. Hassler

Girls cheer for soccer, football and basketball games as well as parades. Students must exhibit a positive school attitude and athletic ability. Physical exams and tryouts are held at the beginning of the school year.

Color Guard (Fall)

Advisor: Mrs. Williamson

No experience is necessary to join Penndale’s Color Guard. All grades are welcome. Members accompany the marching band and work on their rifle skills. Equipment and uniforms are provided.

9 th Grade Boys’/Girls’ Cross Country (Fall)

Coaches: Mr. Jaros and Mr. Crawford

No squad cuts are made. Summer practice begins on Monday, August 14th. During the school year, practices are held every day after school until 5:30 P.M. Contests are held on Wednesdays and Saturdays. The season ends on the first Saturday in November.

Enact

Advisor: Mrs. Smith

Are you concerned about environmental issues? If so, Penndale Middle School sponsors a club just for you! We generally meet three or four days a month on Tuesdays from 3:00-4:00 P.M.

Our purpose is to create, and then implement, plans which enhance our school environment. We are currently in the final stages of implementing a paper recycling program. We also maintain the school pond and are in the process of creating a butterfly and bird sanctuary. Students in all grades are welcome as long as they have a sincere interest in having fun, working outside and learning.

Fall Play

Advisors: Mrs. Sell and Mrs. Fontaine

Actors and actresses wanted! Come audition for the fall play. We meet for a few hours after school from late September until mid-November. All grade levels are encouraged to tryout!

Fall/Spring Bucks-Montgomery County Academic Challenge

Advisor: Mrs. Sturgeon

This is a competition using the Jeopardy format that focuses on 6 academic categories. No practice is involved.

Squad cuts are necessary. Practice begins on Monday, August 14th. Students have practice or a match each school day. The home course is Pine Crest Golf Club. The season ends on the last

Monday in October.

IMC Aides

Advisor: Mrs. Ciaverelli, IMC Assistant

Volunteers from all grade levels are needed during homeroom study periods to assist the library staff. Responsibilities include keeping attendance sheets, checking arrival times and homerooms on passes and possible other duties as needed by the library staff. Volunteers are recruited for each marking period at the beginning of the first and second semesters. Sign-up sheets are available at the IMC during those times.

Indoor Guard

Advisor: Mrs. Williamson

Students from all grade levels are selected from the three middle schools to compete with silks, rifles, crew, flags and specialty props. All students may tryout.

Jazz Band

Advisor: Mr. Kennedy

Instrumental students are selected by audition. Performances are scheduled during the 2 nd semester.

Jazz Choir

Advisor: Ms. Smith

Any 7 th

, 8 th

or 9 th

grade student who is in chorus, band or orchestra is welcome to audition with

Ms. Smith in September. The choir practices from October until the end of May. Rehearsals are on Tuesday evenings. This group is the school’s traveling ensemble and they perform at elementary schools, school district functions and out in the community.

7 th /8 th Grade Girls’ Lacrosse (Spring)

Coaches: Mrs. Higgins and Mrs. Vandewater

9 th Grade Boys’ Lacrosse (Spring)

Coach: Mr. Burnett

Squad cuts are usually necessary. Practice begins Monday, March 5th and is held every day until

5:30 P.M. and on Saturday mornings. Games are played on weekday afternoons and several

Saturdays. The season ends in late May.

9 th Grade Girls’ Lacrosse (Spring)

Coaches: Ms. Burnetski and Mrs. Lewandowski

Math Team

Advisors: Mrs. Sturgeon and Mrs. Markowitz

Math Team for 7 th and 8 th grade students meets once a week from October through February. Students are invited based upon a screening test given in math class. Mrs. Sturgeon and Mrs. Markowitz enjoy working with these students who like math challenges.

National Junior Honor Society

Advisor: Mr. Jackson

This organization promotes scholarship, leadership, service and character. Membership is based on academic performance and faculty input.

Newspaper/Literary Magazine

Advisor: Mrs. Lanouette

“The Spartan Scribbler” is open to all students who wish to be reporters, photographers, artists, creative writers or computer experts. No prior experience is needed.

PA Math League Competition

Advisor: Mrs. Sturgeon

Talented 7 th

and 8 th

grade math students participate in a 1-day competition.

Pit Orchestra

Advisor: Mr. Kennedy

This selected group accompanies the cast of the spring musical. Practices start in January.

Science Fair

Advisors: Mr. Johnson and Mr. Jackson

All students are welcome to participate in a Montgomery County-wide science research competition. Contestants create a project related to science or some scientific phenomenon that interests them.

Select Strings

Advisor: Ms. Milbourne

This activity is available to 7 th

and 9 th

grade students who play a string instrument. The

Select Strings Ensemble meets once a week after school from 3:15-4:30 P.M. A tryout is required. Members will compete and perform at the end of the school year.

Ski/Snowboard Club

Advisors: Mr. Powers and Mr. Wendell

All students are welcome to participate. Penndale provides transportation to Bear Creek on selected Friday nights from December through March. Students are financially responsible for the cost of lessons and/or equipment.

7 th /8 th Grade Coed Soccer

Coaches: Mr. Flamer and Mr. Conti

From September until the end of October, a group of boys and girls gather after school to play soccer. Practice is from 3:05 until 5:00 P.M. Good grades are required!

Spring Musical

Think you have the pipes to get the lead? Think your improv is up to snuff? Come audition for this year’s Spring Musical! Auditions are held in late December. Rehearsals are after school from January through March.

Students Against Destructive Decisions (S.A.D.D)

Advisors: Mrs. Matthews and Mrs. Grecu

All students are welcome to participate in this organization which helps educate students about the importance of making wise and healthy decisions.

Student Council

Advisors: Mrs. Bernardini (Hazelwood) and Mr. Broxterman

Elected students meet monthly to discuss activities and concerns of the student body. Any student can run for student council. You must have at least a “C” average in all majors to run for officer or senator positions. All student council members meet once a month. Club officers meet once a week.

February. Swimmers and divers qualifying for District and State championships continue into

March.

Practice begins on Monday, March 5th and is held every day after school until 5:30 P.M. There are some Saturday practices and contests. The season comes to an end in late May.

Summer practice hours begin on Monday, August 14th. There are some Saturday matches scheduled for varsity players. The season ends in late October.

Summer practice hours begin on Monday, August 14th. The season ends during the first weekend in November. During the school year, matches are held on weekdays and Saturdays.

Weavers

Advisor: Mrs. Matthews

If you enjoy weaving, come join a group of students with similar interests!

Wind Ensemble

Advisor: Mr. Heller

The wind ensemble is an extra-curricular activity available to students who currently play a wind or percussion instrument. This performing group is open to all students in grades 7-9 and will be selected by audition. Advanced concert band music will be rehearsed and performed throughout the year. The group rehearses one day a week starting in November, either before school or in the evening. Attendance is important since it is not a regular scheduled class. Students are also required to attend dress rehearsals and concerts.

9 th Grade Boys’ and Girls’ Winter Track (Winter)

Coaches: Mr. Jones and Mr. Jaros

Practice begins on Monday, November 13th and is held every day after school until 5:30 P.M.

Meets are held at area college field houses on Friday nights or Saturdays. The season ends the last Saturday in February.

9 th Grade Wrestling (Winter)

Coach: Mr. Shettsline

No squad cuts are made. Practice begins on Monday, November 13th and is held every day after school until 5:30 P.M. Meets are held on weeknights and Saturdays. The regular season ends in late February.
