Scenario: A 60 yr old male who was admitted with abdominal pain the night before is coming to Radiolgy for an MRI
of his abdomen. The CT performed last night showed an area of concern and an MRI was recommended by the
Radiologist. He is NPO, has an IV running and a PCA with morphine. The PCA seems to be contolling his pain. The
couriers have just arrived with the patient outside MRI and rang the bell, you follow the A-I-D-E-T methodoly
throughout the course of the patients exam. You are sure to use keywords so the patient knows you care about them.
You manage up when the opportunity presents itself and when the patient is finished you are sure to thank him.
Before the patient is picked back up by the couriers, he asks if you would be able to get him another pillow……..

RECEIVES HANDOFF: The transporter brings the patient to Radiology and
introduces you to him. The transporter MANAGES UP you and your team.
ACKNOWLEDGES the patient by smiling and calling out his name, giving good
eye contact:
ASKS him his preferred name.
3.  INTRODUCES self and manages up own skill set. Explains who they are, what
their position is, and why they are there.

CHECKS AND CONFIRMS PATIENT IDENTIFICATION: Ask them to state their
name and birth date. Let patient know you are checking this for their SAFETY
(Key Word) to assure the right test is taken on the right person.
4.  DURATIONS: Lets patient know how long the procedure (MRI) will take and
when the physician will have the results.


EXPLANATION/ASSESSMENT ASKS the patient if he has ever had this
procedure (MRI) before. Explain the procedure, the equipment, and what he will
be asked to do during the procedure. Confirm magnet safety.
LETS THE PATIENT ASK QUESTIONS: What questions do you have before
we get started?

Contact the transporters to return the patient to his room and monitor the wait
time (if the wait time exceeds _______ ) follow up and keep patient updated.
EXPLAINS: How he will return to his room and when he will know whether he
can eat or not.
THANK YOU : Thank the patient for their time
EXPRESSES APPRECIATION to them for their cooperation and communication
Ask if there is ANYTHING ELSE HE/SHE CAN DO for them before ending the
interaction. (Patient requests ice chips—respond appropriately)
Encourage the patient to write down any questions that he has for his doctor.
(Refer to the NOTEPAD AND PENCIL—that should be at the bedside)
