Specialist centre providing assessment and treatment for seriously injured patients 24/7 22 major trauma centres in England Aims to save up to 600 lives each year National standards for all Major Trauma Centres The Major Trauma Network How We Define a Major Trauma Patient ISS score of 9 and above Typical injuries include: • • • • • • • Pelvic fractures Complex extremity fractures Vascular injuries Plastics injuries Complex head injuries Spinal cord injuries Combination of the above OT Role in Setting up the Service in the Year Prior to the MTC Opening Contribution to strategic planning and challenge meetings Lead role on completion of TARN and rehabilitation prescription Identification of equipment required for the service Contributed to the recruitment day Advertised and recruited to a full time B7, B6 & B5 OT Development of major trauma OT competencies What do we see today? Typical conditions seen: Orthopaedic polytrauma from RTAs/falls from a height Spinal fractures Mild to moderate Head Injury Stabbings The Major Trauma Network Typical Interventions Social history gathering Joint transfers/mobility sessions with physio pre-op or day one post- op Cognitive assessments Splinting Equipment/wheelchair assessment and ordering Complex discharge planning Handover to receiving trauma units OT in the MDT • MDT paperwork – first ward in the Trust to do single case notes • Early intervention – rehab focus versus discharge planning • 7 day service • Attendance at Governance meetings and MTC National Conference • Lead role in establishing the major trauma network within LTHT and across the region The next steps • A year later… • Need for an outcome measure (AUSTOMS) • Need to improve the rehabilitation prescription and transfer documents • Revise MTC OT competencies (neuro/orthopaedic/hands and plastics) • Need to evaluate the patient experience (patient satisfaction questionnaire; patient stories) • Follow up clinics • Develop the major trauma network (across the region and with other MTCs) • Formal service review Any questions?
