3L 3R

Is a rule use to clarify which procedures should be performed first in a given numerical or algebraic expression.

Find the value of the expression 3 + 5 × 2

What answer do you get if you add first?

What answer do you get if you multiply first?

How does the order in which you do the operations affect your answer?

To begin, work within parentheses ( ), then brackets [ ], and then braces { } from innermost and work outward. They are known as grouping symbols.

◦ For example: 2{1 + [4(2+1) + 3]} the answer is 32

Simplify exponents and roots working from left to right.

Do multiplication and division, whichever comes first left to right.

Do addition and subtraction, whichever comes first left to right.
