Collects and transfer the hazardous waste (except Mercury and radioactive waste) from each laboratory room to designated hazardous waste room. 2. Facilitate collection of hazardous wastes by UAEU’s hazardous waste contractor from designated hazardous waste room to appropriate treatment/ disposal facility. 3. Ensure that all waste management activities are in compliance with UAE Regulations being implemented by Environmental Authority and Center for Waste Management . Stages of Hazardous Waste Management in UAEU Shared Laboratories Generation Storage Collection and Transport Storage/Retention to Hazardous Waste Room Treatment / Final Disposal Transport Collection by Contractor Khadamat Protocols and Requirements 1. All requests for waste management services shall be logged to Service Desk. 2. All hazardous wastes must be properly packed and labeled before logging a request for collection. 3. Laboratory Waste Collection Form must be completely filled up in logging a request . 4. Biological Wastes must be autoclaved by UAEU personnel before requesting for hazardous waste collection. 5. Laboratory wares should be cleaned/neutralized/dried and free from leak before placing into the stainless steel container. 6. Mercury droplets/spill must be neutralized and make safe/amalgamated by the designated UAEU personnel before logging a request for hazardous waste collection. Waste Segregation/Storage Protocol in the Shared Laboratories Hazardous Waste Packaging Requirements Hazardous Solid Waste/ Contaminated Solid Wastes Biological Wastes for Autoclaving Consolidated Biological Wastes (Autoclaved) Laboratory Wares/Broken Glass Food Waste/NonHazardous for disposal Syringe, blades, needles and other sharps Biological Waste Storage, Pretreatment and Packaging Requirements Biological Wastes Consolidated Autoclaved Wastes Autoclave Facility Autoclaved wastes for final disposal Consolidating Bin for Blue Bags Chemical Waste Storage • Hazardous chemical wastes for disposal shall be stored in its original container e.g glass bottle, plastic or can container • OR Lab user use a suitable and approved container as dictated by the MSDS and or best practice guidelines then Khadamat will collect provided it is properly sealed and labeled in accordance with MSDS. • No decanting will be done by Khadamat and all collected chemical wastes will be disposed in its original state. Mercury Spill Clean Up/Neutralization and Collection Protocol Chemical Spill Clean Up and Collection Protocol Chemical Spill Occur UAEU Laboratory designated personnel to clean up and neutralize the spilled chemical UAEU Laboratory designated Personnel to log request to Khadamat Service Desk for the collection of used spill kit materials Service Desk to forward the request to Waste Management Department KFM Waste Mgt Team to respond and collect the contained chemical spill waste and/or used spill kit materials If university personnel did not report or contain and clean up chemical spill, non conformance report shall be issued by Khadamat and shall be dealt with as an emergency and the room will be evacuated and cordoned until made safe by the UAEU staff. Mercury Spill Clean Up/Neutralization and Collection Protocol Mercury Spill Occurs UAEU Laboratory designated personnel to contain and neutralize/amalgamate the spilled Mercury UAEU Laboratory designated Personnel to log request to Khadamat Service Desk for the collection of neutralized and amalgamated Mercury Service Desk to forward the request to Waste Management Department KFM Waste Mgt Team to respond and facilitate collection of neutralized Mercury If university personnel did not report or contain and neutralize the spilled Mercury, non conformance report shall be issued by Khadamat and shall be dealt with as an emergency and the room will be evacuated and cordoned until made safe by the UAEU staff.
