The Vision of the Emirates GBC
“The UAE will be one of the 5 global leaders in the
reduction of the built environment’s ecological
footprint by 2015.”
Mission Statement
The Emirates Green Building Council is an independent
non-profit forum that shapes policies for the built
environment and facilitates collaborative solutions to
promote sustainable practices in the UAE.
Emirates Green Building Council
What do we do?
Work to influence policy and regulation in the advancement of
sustainable built environment
Capacity build the community towards green building principles
applicable to the region.
provide networking opportunities, technical workshops and conferences
for member and non members.
act as a conduit between members and non members looking for
support, services and products in relation to the built environment.
Provide the link between international Green Building movements and
the local industry.

GLOBAL URBANISATION
The Issues
• rapid pace is forcing compromise
• exacerbated by population / standard
of living increase
• complex design relationships
• very few urban sustainable successes
• no advanced holistic design tools
by 2030 60% of the world’s population will be living in cities……
The Future
• more recycling
• more sustainable stewardship schemes
• carbon labelling
• alternative and innovative materials
• material efficient design
• more local manufacture
• all deleterious materials banned
• global databases
Materials
60% of all materials globally go into the construction industry
Water
over 60% of the earth’s population will face a
water shortage
The Future
• more better recycling
• innovative demand reduction
• more and innovative desalination
• integrated grey & black water recycling
• sea water WC flushing
• new irrigation strategies
Transport
25% of all energy used is by transportation
The Future
• integrated public transport solutions
• higher density development close to hubs
• fewer automobile miles
• low carbon emission solutions
• alternative fuels
• ‘product mile’ schemes
• more cycling / walking
• more congestion charging / taxation
The Future
• low emission design solutions
• intelligent living building solutions
• low water design solutions
• higher density and more mixed use
• better public transport connectivity
• socially superior
• more local materials
• more durable
• more recyclable
• more refurbishment
• inclusively designed
• automated parking
Buildings
• improved indoor environmental quality
50% of all energy
and 30% of all water generated globally is consumed by buildings
• more integrated
renewables
• lower embodied carbon
The Future
• self sustaining communities
• more ‘heart & soul’
• higher densities with transportation hubs
• integrated transport solutions
• low carbon infrastructure
• more urban renewables
• ‘total process’ recycling hubs
• better bio-diversity & ecological solutions
• vertical farming
• more ‘green – blue’ structures
•Developments
more secure
•Even
inclusively
designed
though buildings
are becoming ‘greener’ the ecological footprint of large
•developments
more urban
andregeneration
cities continues to increase
• less pollution
BEAMs and Legislation
The Future
• increased BEAM popularity
• some compulsory BEAMs
• development of DEAMs
• more & increasingly complex building
control legislation
• carbon emission capping & and trading
• building / development labelling
• renewables proportion fixing
