Unzipping standard Digimap data.zip files
Use the standard Windows unzip facility:
1. Data.zip
2. Unzip data.zip:
Contents.txt,
Conditions.txt,
Data files
Unzipping Digimap GML data files
1. Data.zip
2. Unzip data.zip with a standard
Windows unzip utility:
• Contents.txt
• Conditions.txt
• GZip file
3. Unzip GZip
file with a
suitable tool:
GML data file
GZip files
• Windows standard unzip will not work with GZip
files – try:
– Gzip, 7Zip, WinZip
• NOTE: May not be necessary to unzip the GZip
file, depending on conversion requirements.

What are all these different formats?
NTF (National Transfer Format)
NTF is a format designed specifically for the transfer of spatial
information. NTF originally stood for National Transfer Format, and was a
de facto standard created in 1985 by a working group within the
geographic industry. In 1992, it was revised to Version 2.0 and adopted as
a de jure standard. It is now officially called BS 7567 "Electronic transfer of
geographic information (NTF)".
GML (Geography Mark-up Language)
GML is an international standard for storing and transporting
geographical information developed by the OpenGIS Consortium (OGC).
This is an open standard, based on XML, compatible with a host of webbased technologies and encourages interoperability.
TIFF
A common public domain image file format that is supported by many
graphic applications. TIF files can also represent raster and image
datasets that can be imported into ArcGIS, MapInfo and several other
geographical information systems.
What are all these different formats?
DXF
AutoCAD DXF (Drawing Interchange Format, or Drawing Exchange
Format) is a CAD data file format developed by Autodesk for enabling data
interoperability between AutoCAD and other programs.
SHP (ArcView Shapefile)
A geographic data format created by ESRI (ArcGIS is an ESRI product),
which consists of three different files: SHP, SHX, DBF.
MIF/MID (MapInfo export format)
The MapInfo® MIF/MID format is an ASCII format, using two files. The
MapInfo® MIF file contains the layer structure, map projection and the
graphics. The corresponding MapInfo® MID file contains the attribute
values in a comma separated format.
TAB (MapInfo TAB format)
The MapInfo TAB format is a popular geospatial vector data format for
geographic information systems software. It is developed and regulated by
MapInfo as a proprietary format.
What are all these different formats?
• For more details on formats, see the EDINA
guide ‘OS Collection data formats and
conversion guidance’:
TIFF format
• Digimap raster data are supplied as TIFF files - most GIS
or CAD software will accept TIFF image files, with no
need for conversion.
• TFW files also supplied – TIFF World files - contain the
location, scale, and rotation of a map that is stored as a
TIFF image.
• Remember to keep the supplied TIFF files and the TFW
files in the same folder! Otherwise your GIS software
cannot locate the TIFF geographically.
Shape files (SHP)
• Shape files do not require any conversion prior to
use in ArcGIS.
• Remember to keep all constituent parts together

Symbology, or style, files
• InterpOse – provide style files for use with
ArcGIS and MapInfo, which can be installed to
your computer on setup of InterpOse
• Rolta - provide style files with the installation
• Productivity Suite, Map Manager – no style files
supplied. However, EDINA supply style files for
several data products.
