Smart Energy Network Task Force (Send TF)

Resources Canada)
The Smart Energy Network (SEN) concept builds on the Smart Grid concept, but
extends it by optimizing the integration of all available energy sources, including
electricity, natural gas and thermal, within a cluster of residential and
commercial buildings. A SEN uses advanced ICT to deliver the most efficient enduser energy services, while integrating distributed energy and renewables, and
relieving electric grid congestion by conversion and storage of energy.

EMerge Alliance - Brian Patterson (EMerge Alliance)
An open industry association developing standards leading to the rapid
adoption of DC power distribution in commercial buildings.
These innovative standards integrate interior infrastructures, power, controls
and devices in a common microgrid platform to facilitate the hybrid use of AC
and DC power throughout buildings for unprecedented design and space
flexibility, greater energy efficiency and improved sustainability. For more

• … is an extension of a Smart Grid by optimizing the use of all
available energy sources (electricity, natural gas and thermal,
renewable and non-renewable).
• … integrates the energy sources at a building
(residential/commercial) to community level
• … is expected to deliver end-user energy services in a more
affordable, reliable and sustainable way, creating a more efficient
and resilient energy system
• … addresses electric grid congestion through the use of conversion
and storage of energy, and multifunctional/multifuel end-use
devices.

• Goal: “To advance the deployment of SENs and its key components,
by realizing one or more SEN demonstration projects by the end of
2016.”
• Members: Natural Resource Canada (NRCan) / CanmetENERGY,
Canadian Gas Association (CGA), Canadian Electricity Association
(CEA), National Research Council (NRC), Union Gas, University of
Waterloo / Waterloo Institute for Sustainable Energy (WISE),
University of Toronto, Quality Urban Energy Systems of Tomorrow
(QUEST), Energy Technology and Innovations Canada (ETIC) and
Continental Automated Building Association (CABA)
Scope of the SEND TF

Phase I is underway
• Modeling will tell us which components:
• are expected to have a positive contribution to a SEN in terms of
cost, emissions and efficiency
• should be considered for Phase II Lab Testing
• Dedicated post-doctoral fellow
• under supervision of WISE and CanmetENERGY
• supported by Union Gas, CGA and MITACS
Phase II is starting soon
• Plan for Lab Testing with activities, budget and equipment
requirements is available
• Budget and in-kind contributions are partly secured
• Seeking additional non-binding financial and in-kind equipment
contributions (e.g. electrolyzer, fuel cells, control and ICT
equipment)

The CABA Intelligent Buildings & Digital Home Forum will be held in Austin, Texas
from April 14 - 16, 2015. CABA will be collocating with the Broadband Community
Summit, which will have a combined total of 1,000+ industry professionals. For

Keynotes, receptions, networking events, and an IBM Labs tour hosted by IBM. The
