International Workshop on Harmonisation of
GMO Detection and Analysis
Institute
IHCP
Enlargement and Integration Action Workshop

Institute for Health an Consumer Protection
http://ihcp.jrc.ec.europa.eu/
The aim of this workshop is to stimulate harmonisation in GMO
analysis in the region by illustrating the EU legal framework on
GMOs, the current situation in relation to analytical methods and by
sharing with representatives from the different countries the
experiences derived from the implementation of the European
Network of GMO Laboratories (ENGL) in Europe.
Objectives, policy relevance
and content of workshop
Improvement of the overall scientific competence on official testing
services is fundamental to facilitate the adoption and application of
testing methods validated in the EU and to guarantee respect for
Community rules in food/feed exports to Europe. The development
of a harmonised and more uniform approach in GMO analysis, the
understanding of the EU legal frame and of the requirements in
relation to control and safety should also facilitate international
trade. Harmonisation and capacity building would increase the
expertise of non-EU operators and would help them in adapting their
procedures for checking compliance with EU requirements.
This Workshop would constitute a follow-up to similar events
conducted in Turkey in 2009 and Croatia in 2010 and it would serve
as a milestone towards harmonisation in GMO analysis in the region
and a contribution to the respect for Community rules in food/feed
exports to Europe while facilitating National operators in meeting EU
requirements.
