2. WRITE DOWN HOMEWORK:
Finish your GMO foldable
3. TAKE OUT HOMEWORK: GATTACA discussion questions
Matrix Master: Get the iPad!
Attendance Announcer: Take attendance!
HYBRID vs GMO
DO NOW:
1. What is a hybrid species? Explain and give an
example.
2. What is a GMO? Explain and give an example.
Hybrid Species: A Cross of Two Similar
Species (can occur naturally)
Zebroid
Grolar Bears
GMOs: Organisms with Manipulated
DNA (may have pieces from one or
more other species – could never
breed in nature)
People are concerned about GMOs
hybridizing with already existing
species!
Read Aloud: GMOs hybridizing with
native species
• If genetically modified organisms cross with native
species, they will create a new hybrid species that will
have some genetically modified genes.
• These hybrids might spread and out-compete, or “take
over” in place of the native species.
• The hybrids will have no natural predators. If Glofish
were to escape and cross with natural species, sharks
would not recognize these bright fish as a food source.
• These new hybrid species might be unsafe! They might
be aggressive, or dangerous to eat.
Answer Discussion Question:
5 minutes
Create your own GMO (Foldable)
Left Section (small):
What would your GMO be
able to do? Why is it helpful
or cool?
Middle Section (big):
What would it look like?
Draw a picture (in color!)
Right Section (small):
Where would its genes
come from? (other species,
specially designed?)
