Like American Idol does for aspiring singers, or March Madness does for college basketball teams seeking the national championship, “Your Big Idea: Penn Medicine’s Innovation Tournament” provides a structured,competitive environment for ideas from Penn Medicine’s faculty and staff to be evaluated, and potentially developed and funded. I HAVE A NEW SOLUTION I’M RETHINKING RESOURCES I’VE GOT WHAT YOU NEED I SEE A PROBLEM, AND I HAVE AN IDEA FOR A BRAND NEW SOLUTION TO THAT PROBLEM. WE CAN DO THINGS BETTER BY RETHINKING HOW WE LEVERAGE THE RESOURCES AT HAND. I HAVE AN IDEA FOR SOMETHING THAT PEOPLE DON'T EVEN KNOW THEY NEED...YET This year’s theme is: Improving the Patient Experience at Penn Medicine. Like American Idol or March Madness, many will participate, but only a few will win. However, every idea is valued. YOUR BIG IDEA: Improving the Patient Experience at Penn Medicine. 2 Why an Innovation Tournament? Now and in the future, improving the experiences of our patients and their families will require ‘out of the box’ thinking. Everyone at Penn Medicine impacts the patient experience.The best solutions come from those closest to the problems. PHARMACY IT HOSPICE BILLING “Your Big Idea” is focused on encouraging ideas from faculty and staff from all over Penn Medicine. YOUR BIG IDEA: Improving the Patient Experience at Penn Medicine. 3 How does it work? Your Big Idea Format Faculty and staff submit ideas via the web, by email, or in physical ‘drop boxes’ The most promising ideas move on to facilitator-led workshop that results in a draft business plan. The “Round 2 workshop winners” refine business plan with proposed budget and cost/benefit analysis. Resources provided to develop presentations. Ideas are pitched to Penn Medicine Leadership. Exceptional ideas receive funding and resources for implementation. YOUR BIG IDEA: Improving the Patient Experience at Penn Medicine. 4 How are the ideas rated? Round 1 Submitted ideas are presented to website users randomly and are rated on the website using a 5-star rating system, similar to sites like Yelp. Those votes, coupled with votes from a committee representing all entities results in the selection of 15-20% of the ideas that move on to Round 2. Round 2 Those 15-20% participate in in-person workshops, where participants will vote and select ideas that will move forward to the final round Final Round In the Final Round, senior executives from across Penn Medicine will decide which ideas will win and be funded. The final round will take place in a town hall setting, open to all employees. YOUR BIG IDEA: Improving the Patient Experience at Penn Medicine. 5 Where within Penn Medicine has this been done? Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care (Lee Fleisher) • Innovation challenge was seeking ideas that are“interventions which increase the quality or efficiency of delivering clinical care” • Constraint of “factors under control of the department” • 40 ideas (out of 120 invited employees) Abramsom Cancer Center (Brad Geiger) • Innovation challenge was seeking ideas that “improve patient satisfaction, staff learning and engagement, operational efficiency and financial performance” • Constraint of “within 3 months and under $1,000” • 45 ideas (out of a staff of 90) frontline employees in Chemotherapy Observations from the two pilots • Very positive feed-back from both groups; good quantity and quality • Different type of good ideas (quick “fix-its” vs “high potentials”) • Benefits of commitment from local leadership YOUR BIG IDEA: Improving the Patient Experience at Penn Medicine. 6 Tournament Timeline ANNOUNCEMENT JANUARY 2012 PROMOTION FEBRUARY 1-7, 2012 ROUND 1: OPEN SUBMISSION FEBRUARY 7-MARCH 23, 2012 SUBMISSION DEADLINE MARCH 23, 2012 ROUND 2: LIVE WORKSHOPS APRIL 11-12, 2012 PROPOSAL PREPARATION APRIL16–MAY 1, 2012 FINAL PITCHES MAY 9, 2012 Official “Announcement of “Your Big Idea: Penn Medicine’s Innovation Tournament” The “Your Big Idea” Tournament Team consisting of entity reps spread the word at the local level using the Communications Toolkit” Ideas are submitted via a website, by email, or in physical drop boxes that will be located throughout Penn Medicine facilities” Deadline for Submission. The 50-100 most promising ideas from Round 1 ‘make the cut” Round 2 - Live, facilitated idea development sessions. About 10 ‘winning’ ideas move on. Workshops will take place on: April 11, 2012 • 8 AM–NOON & 1–5 PM April 12, 2012 • 8 AM–NOON & 4–8 PM Intersession Work – Workshop winners refine business plans and prepare for final presentations Town Hall presentations of final proposals to Penn Medicine leadership.
