John Muir By John Verbiest & Andrew Munro John Muir • John Muir born in Dumbar on April 21st 1838 • His parents Daniel Muir and Ann Gilrye. • John Muir was one of eight children. • He had many occupations writer, Engineer, Naturalist, Botanist. • In 1849 John Muir’s family emigrated to the united states. Life in America • John’s family first moved to a farm near portage, Wisconsin the farm was called Mountain lake farm. This is a National Historic landmark. • At the age of 22 he joined the University of WisconsinMadison. • In 1864 he left school to go to Canada for the spring, summer and fall. • At Canada he collected plants, leaves and studied animals. • In Ontario he met his brother Daniel they worked at a saw mill together On the shore of lake Huron. Canada • During 1864 president Lincoln was calling half a million soldiers , the chances of him getting called up was becoming more likely. • John Muir was not picked to go into battle. • John Muir worked at a mill in Canada until 1866, He left Canada and went back Indianapolis and worked as an engineer. First National Park • John Muir loved going on long walks in the wild parts of the USA, studying plant, birds and animals. John Muir feared that farming, timber felling and mining would destroy the wilderness. • John Muir also went on to create the first nation park in Yosemite valley In California. Death • John Muir died on 24th December 1914 at the age of 76 in Los Angeles, California. • John Muir died of pneumonia after going to Daggett, California to visit his daughter Helen Muir Funk. Conclusion • John Muir was remembered because he was the first person to think up the idea of a national park.
