Sophomore Project English II Step One ► Choose a full length grade appropriate novel by a world author or set in another country. ► Countries NOT allowed: The United States, The United Kingdom (England, Ireland, Scotland, or Wales) or Canada Step Two Upon completion of your novel, you will research three cultural areas relevant to the country and present in the novel. Areas to research: Geography History Food Religion Structure of Society Dress Family Life Customs Cultural Arts Step Three • Take notes on note cards on the three chosen areas. • You must also take notes on your author • Note cards requirements (3x5 cards): • Source card requirements (4x6 cards): 4 sources minimum; 1 must be an internet source Research Reminders • No general encyclopedias may be used • No .com websites • No Wikipedia Paper Requirements • Students must generate a thesis statement that shows the connection between the piece of literature, the chosen country/culture, and the researched topics. • Paper must follow an outline that follow MLA format • Parenthetical documentation must be shown in the paper. Paper Requirements cont. • Works Cited page that follows MLA format and lists sources in alphabetical order. • Title page with graphic. • Everything should be typed in 12 point font, Times New Roman and double spaced. • No use of personal pronouns • No contractions • Spell out numbers under 100. Step Four Make an artifact related to your country or novel. Must be made and not purchased. Should reflect 3-6 hours of time to complete – Ideas: Model of landscape, landmark, or item from book, clothing or flag. – Work will be done outside of class Step Five Made a presentation board Large tri-fold board Include the name of your country, title of your book, and author’s name Include pictures related to your country or book (flag, book cover, author picture, food, important landmarks, etc.) Pictures should have typed captions Most work will be done outside of class. Step Six Oral presentation You are expected to present your board, artifact, and paper to your class. Speech must be between 5-8 minutes. Step Seven • Attend the Sophomore Culture Fair • You must display your board, artifact, and paper during the Culture Fair. • You should be able to answer questions about any of your materials.
