Before writing, all authors must consider several different elements.
* To whom am I writing?

* What do I want my audience to know?
* What form should this take?

R.A.F.T. is a type of writing assignment that allows the author to be creative while still adhering to some academic standards.
* It is an acronym that stands for the following: Role of the writer, Audience, Format, and Topic.
* Basically, it offers guidance in answering some of those difficult questions.

* Directions: Please choose ONE of the following roles listed below. Each option gives specific guidelines to a proper response, so pay close attention to the option that you choose.
* 1. Write a thank you letter to Jay Gatsby from the point of view of one of his invited guests at a recent party. Be sure to include what you did at the party, the names of people you hung out with, and the specific aspects of the party that made it fabulous. Also, be sure to thank your gracious host.
* 2. You are Jordan Baker. Write a break-up letter to Nick Carraway, incorporating at least three moments from the story in your letter.
* 3. You are Pammy Buchanan (Tom and Daisy’s daughter) seeking emancipation from your parents.
Write a letter to Children’s Services listing at least three reasons/stories in support of why you should be released from your parents’ care.
* 4. You are a newspaper reporter for the New York Times. Write an article about the hit and run accident (be sure to include interviews/quotes/reactions from different people involved or spectating).
* 5. You are a newspaper reporter for the New York Times. Write an article about the MAJOR events in chapter 8 (be sure to include interviews/quotes/reactions from different people involved or spectating).

Be sure to refer specifically to The Great Gatsby; in other words, include details/facts that are stated in the novel.

Regardless of which you choose, your response should be at least one page (not three-quarters of a page), typed, double-spaced, 12-point font with one-inch margins in
M.L.A. format.
* It should follow typical grammar conventions, as well.

* The assignment is worth 20 points, which will be broken down as follows:

Creativity (5 points): Was the response enjoyable to read?
* Content (5 points): Did you actually do what the question asked? Did you make specific, relevant references to the novel? Did you incorporate important parts into your response?
* Format (5 points): Did you follow the format specific to your question? Did you follow the format guidelines listed in the paragraph above (e.g. one-page, typed, etc.)?

Grammar (5 points): Do you have major, distracting grammar errors?
