WHAT IS PROGRESS

Progress improves life

Progress is secular, objective, singular

Today, progress has the status of myth

MYTH: an arrangement of the past, whether real or imagined, in patterns that reinforce a culture’s deepest values and aspirations … we live and die by myths. They are the maps by which cultures navigate through time.

THE ERROR OF OUR ASSUMPTIONS ABOUT PROGRESS

Weapons

From Chinese gunpowder there has been progress in BANGS:

1. firecrackers, 2. cannons, 3. petard, 4. high explosive shells, 5. atomic bomb
