It also served as a hospital and protection bunker in World War II The underground tunnels were added just as England started a battle with Napoleon The hospital was added at a later time just as World War II was beginning World war II • In World War II, Dover Castle was looked upon as one of the greatest forts in England. Dover Castle had been refurbished when the wars started with Napoleon. Only then were there underground tunnels. The hospital and telecommunications center were added when World War II had began. These improvements helped Britain and the USA to win World War II and help save many more lives. Entrance Dover Castle’s Entrance to the Main foyer of the Castle Underground tunnels The Secret underground tunnels were added before wars with Napoleon The British looked upon Dover Castle very greatly, and took the castle over and refurbished it to be a replacement for the soldier barracks above ground. The idea of a telecommunications center was added after the USA told Britain that the Japanese were controlling their radio signals. With the telecommunications center underground, it was completely undetectable. Once the war started to move into England, soldiers were getting injured and had to go to a far away location from Dover to get treated. Underground Hospital When Britain realized that the soldiers needed a new place to get treated, once again Britain was going to use Dover Castle as something else. When construction began at Dover to make a new hospital, they couldn’t decide where in the Castle to put it. Then one of the British generals decided to add one underground just like the tunnels. This project was finished about 1 year later.
