ENG1D UNIT ONE: IF YOU COULD TELL A STORY... What story would you tell? LESSON 1: MAKING MEANING… Discussion question: When we read stories, how do we make meaning of them? Discussion question: Is there ever one correct meaning of a story? MULTIPLE PERSPECTIVES Activity: Just a piece of the picture… Look at the picture to the right…. In your notebook, use the clues in the picture to write a brief, but accurate story about what has happened. You have 5 minutes. Make sure to keep this story with you as we might use them again later. Go! Now let’s share! Check out the real story: http://metronews.ca/features/paralympics2014/970971/canada-bounced-in-sledge-hockey-atparalympics/ Discussion Question: Think about how your own version differs from the story in the news. Why do you think that is? UNDERSTANDING OURSELVES AS READERS… Please take this note: We make meaning by projecting different perspectives onto the characters, plot, and setting in a story. Our perspectives (or how we see or feel about the world around us) are shaped by our experiences, values, cultural beliefs, and every day practices. In the same way, characters’ perspectives are shaped by their experiences, values, cultural beliefs, and every day practices. Note: perspective is not the same as point of view in a story (to examine later) For this reason, in order to understand how we make meaning of a particular story, it is imperative that we understand ourselves first. UNDERSTANDING OURSELVES AS READERS… Your task (Think, Pair, Share): Think: Independently complete #1 on pg. 62 in your textbook. (Think about your own values in relation to Sibia’s. Develop a chart to compare the two, using the following categories: Lifestyle, Threats to Safety, Life Goals, Role of Children, Education, Treasure or Wealth, Nature of work, Sources of Self-Worth.) Then answer the questions: What common values do I share with Sibia? Where do we differ in our values? Pair: Compare your answers to the above questions with those answers of your seating partner. Share: Discuss as a class. Why is it important to understand values and perspectives (yours and others) when reading a story? MSIP WORK Write the following questions in your notebook and complete them for MSIP: Keeping your learning today in mind, consider why the story begins with a detailed description of the crocodile, before shifting to Sibia’s perspective. What does this choice accomplish? Sibia cries to her mother at the end of the story that she “found a blue bead for [her] necklace”—implying that “something must have happened” to her. Given today’s learning, do you think this moment is significant? Why or why not?
