Backswing
Purpose of the skill - move the ball from the ground to the offensive player’s hands
Joints:
-
Ankle – ankles are flexed, the back (weight bearing foot) is in dorsi-flexion, the non-weight
bearing foot is flexed at 90 degrees and pointed towards the passing target
-
knee – both knees are bent, the weight bearing leg is flexed to a greater angle
-
hip – the abdomen is flexed, the athlete is leaning forward, hips facing forward (squared up
toward the scrum)
-
shoulder – shoulders are in line with the hips (squared towards the scrum, not the target),
-
elbow - elbows are slightly bent, as the ball is being held just anterior to the body, arms are
both pulled back towards the leg supporting most of the body weight
-
hands – fingers are spread and comfortably wrapped around the sides of the rugby ball,
wrists are flexed
-
head – head is turned to the side, looking at the passing target

