After Fall of Rome, there was chaos. No one was safe
Culture and education took a back seat to survival
Catholic church was unifying force on the manor
Feudalism was established as a means of protection from ‘barbarian’ tribes
Only literate people were monks, nuns, church officials
SCIENTIFIC REVOLUTION
Feudalism began collapsing as nation-states began to form
As nation-states began to form, education began to return, new languages formed
Scientists began to educate traditional “truths” that they had been told by Catholic
Church (ie: Earth is center of universe, everything is as God wants it, have faith, etc)
As scientists began to disprove the church, the church began losing power
Revolution because it was a rapid change in traditional beliefs
Scientists were excommunicated for their work

 Galileo (proved heliocentric theory with telescope)
 Newton (gravity)
 Bacon (Scientific Method)
 Descartes (analytical geometry, plane system – forerunner of latitude/longitude)
RENAISSANCE
 Scientists paved the way for other groups of academic study
 Began in Italy (major trade center, last strong hold of classical civilization)
 Humanism: Life in the now as well as religion
 Art (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles)
 Literature (Dante’s Divine Comedy, Shakespeare, MACHIAVELLI)
 Gutenberg’s printing press
 Scientific revolution + Renaissance + Printing Press = Reformation, Exploration
WHAT DO THEY HAVE IN COMMON?
 Both the Scientific Revolution and Renaissance ushered in an era of questioning old
traditions and values (church, feudalism, social hierarchy)
Catholic Church is weakened and will be further divided in reformation
This questioning of ideas will lead us into the beginning of this years studies. People
will continuing questioning authority throughout the enlightenment, which will cause
people to revolt against their governments….
