• “The BED TEST” is a “modified” quick and
informal spelling inventory used to
understand a student’s level of orthographic
knowledge.
• Spelling is developmental, and represented by
spelling stages.
• The results have implications for instruction
in reading, writing, vocabulary and spelling.

stage of the student.
• Check for certain features on the student’s
BED test—mark YES if feature is always
present. The last place you check OFTEN is
the student’s stage of spelling development.
