Lille is a top travel destination, with its Flemish ambience, excellent museums, great food, and
the world-renowned Grande Braderie (Europe's biggest flea market).
Lille (or Ryssel in Flemish) is the most important city in northern France, and the fourth biggest in
France. The award of European Capital of Culture in 2004, and the massive investment that
came with it, have helped boost the profile of the city.
With more affordable accommodations and living costs compared to other major European
capitals, Lille is a student oriented city, with a very young population and a vibrant cultural
scene and an array of historical sights to take in.
At the crossroads of Northern Europe, Lille is closely situated to many other interesting travel
destinations, only an hour to Paris, 40 mins to Brussels and 1.45 hours to London by fast train
Université Lille 1 currently has approximately 20,000 students
and is built on 110 hectares with 4 campuses. It is one of the
largest scientific universities in France .
Constantly developing high-level research in all of its taught
disciplines. The teaching and research missions of the University
are closely linked and interdependent on one another.
Université Lille 1 has 2,000 researchers belonging to laboratories
with national recognition from the French Ministry of Research
for the quality of their research activity. Furthermore, most of
the major French research bodies work in close collaboration
with Université Lille 1 laboratories.
