PRESS RELEASE
On Wednesday, 13th October 2010 in Lille (France), E.G.I.D. will organise its first
symposium “Diabetes Research Breakthroughs : Vintage 2010”.
E.G.I.D. (European Genomic Institute for Diabetes) will soon organise its first symposium
entitled : “Diabetes Research Breakthroughs : Vintage 2010”. This event will take place in the
Nord-Pas de Calais Regional Council.
Nine international specialists will come from Europe and the United States to discuss this
issue. At the event, the best poster will be awarded to a young researcher.
Diabetes is a public health issue which affects 200 million people in the world. In Europe, it is
now a major cause of death (by cardiovascular diseases) and of disability (blindness,
amputations etc…). In addition, more than 20 million children are obese or overweight, with
many of them suffering from cardiovascular problems and Diabetes.
In France, Diabetes is diagnosed at a level of 3.9 percent of the total population, representing
2.5 million patients in 2007. The Nord-Pas de Calais is the most affected region in France
with 4.8 percent diagnosed with the disease. 150,000 individuals in the region are treated for
type two Diabetes every year, and this number has doubled in the last five years.
E.G.I.D. was launched on 25th May 2009. It is the first institute in France devoted to Diabetes.
Its aims are to develop and embed a multidisciplinary research program of international
reknown in the Nord-Pas de Calais region.
E.G.I.D. is deeply involved with scientific and medical knowledge at every level, from
fundamental, theorical research to practical clinical applications. The mission of the institute
is to identify Diabetes risk factors, to understand the mechanisms that complicate the
condition, to prevent the development of disease and offer (or develop) better treatment for
patients.
Since 2009, these three teams have formalised their earlier collaboration as a partnership
within E.G.I.D. :
- Join lab 8199 « Génomique et maladies métaboliques » directed by Pr Philippe Froguel
(Lille University of Health and Law – CNRS - Pasteur Institute in Lille)
- Unit 859 « Biothérapie du diabète » directed by Pr François Pattou (Lille University of
Health and Law – Lille University Hospital – Inserm)
- and Unit 1011 « Récepteurs nucléaires, maladies cardiovasculaires et athérosclérose »
directed by Pr Bart Staels (Lille University of Health and Law – Pasteur Institute in Lille–
Inserm)
CNRS, INSERM, Lille University of Health and Law, Lille University Hospital, and NordPas de Calais Regional Council combine their strengths to overcome the major public health
problem that is Diabetes.
