AUSL Performance Data 1 The turnaround model An AUSL turnaround begins with new leaders, teachers and staff, additional programs and upgraded facilities, resulting in more opportunities for Chicago’s children. • This proven method brings in highly qualified staff specially trained to work in low-performing schools to help meet the specific needs of those students. • Turnarounds have a laser focus on driving student learning, providing additional academic support in core subjects, implementing a high-quality instruction and setting transparent goals for schools, staff and students to reach. Proven results Working in some of the District’s most challenging environments, AUSL has had a profound impact on academic performance and school culture: • Thirteen of 16 AUSL turnarounds have outpaced the District average on ISAT meets or exceeds growth since undergoing the turnaround process. • In 2013, four AUSL schools, including Piccolo, Herzl, Fuller and Marquette placed in the top 10 percent of growth for the District. All of these schools were in their first year under AUSL’s management. • AUSL turnaround schools have outpaced the District average on NWEA Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) meets or exceeds growth in core subjects, including math and science. 3 Elementary Turnaround Schools 4 AUSL Schools Since Turnaround Change in ISAT Composite Meet/Exceed Since Turnaround 39.5% 40% 13 of the 16 AUSL Turnarounds outpaced the District on Meets or Exceeds Gains since turnaround. 35% 29% 30% 27.1% 22.9% 25% 20% 15% 19.2% 15.1% 12.9% 12.9% 12.9% 11.6% 10.5% 10.5% 14.3% 4% 5% 15.4% 14.1% 10.5% 10% 7.7% 6.5% 7.7% 7.7% 5.7% 1.8% 8.2% 1.8% 9.1% 1.8% 7.8% 1.8% 1.8% 1.8% 0% SINCE 2008 SINCE 2009 SINCE 2010 AUSL PICCOLO MARQUETTE HERZL FULLER CASALS DENEEN CURTIS BRADWELL JOHNSON DULLES BETHUNE MORTON SINCE 2007 HOWE HARVARD SINCE 2006 SINCE 2012 District 5 STAGG -2.1% -5% SHERMAN Percentage Point Change Since Turnaround 45% AUSL Turnaround Schools ISAT Composite, Meets or Exceeds One-Year Gains 8.0% 7.3% 7.2% 6.0% 2.0% 3.9% 3.8% 4.0% 2.2% 1.8% 2.4% 2.4% 3.8% 2.9% 1.8% 2.8% 2.0% 0.0% 0.0% 2007 Year 2007 2008 2009 2010 2011 2012 2013 2008 2009 2010 AUSL District AUSL Schools included in One-Year Gains Sherman + Harvard + Howe and Morton + Dulles, Johnson, and Bethune + Bradwell, Deneen, and Curtis Same as 2011 + Casals, Fuller, Herzl, Marquette, Piccolo, and Stagg 2011 2012 2013 AUSL Turnarounds had better one-year gains than the District on Meets or Exceeds in each of the last six years. 6 Average growth at AUSL was higher than most networks in 2012-2013 NOTES: AUSL average includes all AUSL schools, including non-turnarounds.
