Back to School Night Marriotts Ridge High School 2011-2012 9/15/10 ABOUT ME • Greg Strimel: – Graduated Cal U of PA, Bachelors of Science Technology Education – Masters of Technology Ed Cal U of PA – Pursuing PHd in Education OLD DOMINION – CTE / STEM ITL – Previously taught at Reservoir High School – Instructs FOT, EDD, ATA, MST – 6 years in the Army Infantry – OIF-2005-2006 – Master Teacher for Foundations of Tech – (Master Teacher for PLTW) What do We Teach? • • • • SCIENCE TECHNOLOGY ENGINEERING MATH What is Technology? • the application of knowledge, tools, and resources to extend our human capabilities in order to solve problems that will meet our needs and wants What is Engineering? • to systematically apply mathematical, scientific, and technical principles to design and create real-world solutions that meet our needs and desires. What is Technology & Engineering Education? • We educate students to be technologically literate • Guides students in learning how to utilize knowledge, creativity, and critical thinking to solve real-world problems. Technology & Engineering Education • Course Selection: – Foundations of Technology (FOT) – Advanced Design Applications (ADA) – Advanced Technical Applications – Engineering Design • Project Lead the Way Course Selection: – Introduction to Engineering Design (IED) – Principals of Engineering (POE) – Digital Electronics (DE) – Engineering Design and Development (EDD) Foundations of Technology • This course prepares students to understand and apply technological concepts and processes that are cornerstone of the high school technology education program. • Students study the nature and technological issues of the “designed world”. Foundations of Technology • Group and individual activities engage students in creating ideas, developing innovations, design, fabricating, and engineering practical solutions. • Technology content, resources, and laboratory/classroom activities allow students to apply science, mathematics and other school subjects in authentic situations. Advanced Design Applications • ADA is a standards based, technological design course that provides a deeper understanding of the designed world consisting of four separate learning units, each nine weeks in length: Manufacturing, Energy and Power, Construction, and Transportation technologies. Advanced Design Applications • Group and individual activities engage students in creating ideas, developing innovation, design, fabrication, and engineering practical solutions to a variety of problems. Advanced Technical Applications • ATA is a standards based, technological design course that provides a deeper understanding of the designed world consisting of four separate learning units, each nine weeks in length: Medical, Information & Communication, Bio-Related, and Entertainment technologies. Engineering Design • This course provides a foundation for a variety of engineering and technical careers such as mechanical, electrical, civil and aerospace engineering. • Topics may include simple and complex machines, electricity and electronics, structural design and analysis, and thermodynamics. Engineering Design • Students will solve engineering problems through mechanical drawing and prototype construction and testing in a multi-sensory laboratory setting. PLTW: Introduction to Engineering Design • IED is a course through which students are introduced to the area of industrial technical communications. Students learn to develop and read drawings used in technical fields to describe size and shape; manufacturing, assembly, and repair procedures. PLTW: Introduction to Engineering Design • Students develop skills with organization and planning as they analyze problems and synthesize solutions. Through this course students will gain skills for entry into college and university engineering programs or technical schools. PLTW: Principles of Engineering • POE is a “hands on course” that helps the student understand the field of engineering and engineering technology. Students design, construct, test, and evaluate various projects that apply knowledge and skills. PLTW: Principles of Engineering • Students explore various technology systems and manufacturing processes to learn how engineers and technicians apply math, science, and technology in an engineering problem-solving process.
