CHS LAUNCHES CORONA STEM ACADEMY! The Corona STEM Academy is pleased to offers two exciting pathways, Engineering and Bio-Medical. We have partnered with Project Lead the Way (PLTW) to offer our students the most rigorous STEM Curriculum available. Within the two pathways, students will engage in open-ended problem solving, use engineering and scientific processes to test theories, and use teamwork and communication skills to complete projects. This Academy will help to prepare students for college and careers in the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields. Both pathways will be taught as a cohort. Students will be grouped together with the same teachers to enhance the educational experience and to provide additional support throughout the year. ENGINEERING PATHWAY This is a four year pathway beginning with Intro to Engineering Design. Here you will learn the design process and how to apply math, science, and engineering standards to hands-on projects. You will work both individually and in teams to design solutions to a variety of problems using 3D modeling software, and use an engineering notebook to document their work. The second year you will take Principles of Engineering. In this class you will explore a broad range of engineering topics, including mechanisms, the strength of structures and materials, and automation. Students develop skills in problem solving, research, and design while learning strategies for design process documentation, collaboration, and presentation. The third year you will take Computer Integrated Manufacturing. This course illuminates the opportunities related to understanding manufacturing. At the same time, it teaches students about manufacturing processes, product design, robotics, and automation. Students can earn a virtual manufacturing badge recognized by the National Manufacturing Badge system. The final year you will take Engineering Design and Development. The knowledge and skills students acquire throughout PLTW Engineering come together in EDD as they identify an issue and then research, design, and test a solution, ultimately presenting their solution to a panel of engineers. Students apply the professional skills they have developed to document a design process to standards, completing EDD ready to take on any post-secondary program or career. If you are interested in participating in this unique, rigorous educational opportunity, obtain an application for the Corona High School STEM Academy from your counselor or science teacher. The Early Admission Application Deadline is December 17th. There is also a Regular Application Deadline of April 29, 2016. CHS counselors will be at your school in March with more information.
