Why Do Change Efforts Lose
Momentum?
“Transformation is a long-term process that
requires consistent energy and enthusiasm, and
everyone involved must be constantly reminded of
the big opportunities that lie ahead. All too often,
however, change efforts start off with a big bang,
and quickly lose their firepower when people
declare victory too soon.” John Kotter, Forbes.com 2011
John Kotter is the chief innovation officer at Kotter International, a firm that helps leaders accelerate strategy implementation in
their organizations. He is also the Konosuke Matsushita Professor of Leadership, Emeritus, at Harvard Business School.
What is Momentum?
DEFINITION OF MOMENTUM
1. Physics: A measure of the motion of a body equal to the product
of its mass and velocity.
Also called linear momentum.
1. Philosophy: An essential or constituent element; a moment.
3. Figuratively: Momentum can refer to the tendency of a person or
group to repeat recent success: “The team definitely had
momentum after scoring those last two touchdowns.”

LINEAR MOMENTUM
A conserved quantity, meaning that if a
closed system is not affected by
external forces, its total linear
momentum cannot change.

MOTION
The initial state of the body, either of rest
or of motion, will persist.
If the force is greater than the resistance,
motion will result.
