CERTIFICATE EDUCATION PARAEDUCATOR Program Description Thank you for your interest in the Paraeducator Certificate. The Paraeducator Certificate program is designed to prepare students to successfully complete the Kentucky Paraeducator Assessment or Kentucky Department of Education approved alternative assessment. Paraeducators who wish to earn a two-year degree may complete the (AAS) Teacher Associate track. KCTCS Colleges This certificate is offered by Bluegrass Community and Technical College, Elizabethtown Community and Technical College, Gateway Community and Technical College, Hazard Community and Technical College, Hopkinsville Community College, Jefferson Community and Technical College, Maysville Community and Technical College, Owensboro Community and Technical College, Somerset Community College, & Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College. One of these colleges must be designated as your Home College. Even though some of the classes may be delivered by different KCTCS colleges, only the Home College will admit you and take care of all of your student service needs including advising, library services, billing, financial aid, and most importantly, awarding the certificate. Getting Started Students may register for KCTCS online classes offered system wide directly at any KCTCS college. Individuals may also complete a “course inquiry” submit form through www.kyvc.org. KYVC course inquiries are submitted directly to the KCTCS Home College identified by the student. The student’s chosen Home College processes the course inquiry either through formal admission procedures or class enrollment. Paraeducator Upon completion of this program, the graduate can: 1. Maintain a consistent classroom routine. 2. Use verbal, nonverbal, and written communication effectively. 3. Perform assigned responsibilities in a manner consistent with established professional and ethical guidelines. 4. Demonstrate a basic knowledge of Kentucky’s educational goals for all students. 5. Implement strategies that promote the learners’ independence across all relevant educational settings. 6. Demonstrate knowledge of roles and responsibilities of the paraeducator related to instruction, intervention, and direct service. 7. Oversee effective use of work time of students. 8. Participate in on-going staff development and self-evaluation activities, and apply constructive feedback to parties within the educational setting. 9. Demonstrate an understanding of learning styles 10. Demonstrate an understanding of environmental factors that impact teaching & learning process. 11. Demonstrate how to use reference sources to access information on characteristics of learners. Course Requirements Below is a list of courses involved in this degree. The entire degree may be completed online; however, some faculty may require onsite lab visits so be sure to check this before enrolling in a class.
