Masters Projects 2015
Tetrapak
• Additive manufacturing in the supply-chain
– Can AM be used to manufacture their spare parts
on demand
– Tetrapak currently have over 800,000 spare parts
for machines that are up to over to 20 years old.
– This project is case study to make 2 polymer and 2
metal parts to determine is AM is usable for spare
parts and, if so, determine which type of spare
parts.
– 1 or 2 students
Volvo
• AM in the automotive supply-chain
– Volvo was one of the early adaptors of AM and has used it mainly for
prototypes. The technology has recently taken the step to go from
“Rapid Prototyping” to Additive Manufacturing. Volvo feels that the
time is right to investigate for next steps and bring the AM technology
into the field of conventional development methods. More specifically,
the problem is to come up with a solution of how AM could be
implemented for an automotive low volume production series.
– Desired qualification: Good knowledge of plastics or metals or both,
industrial processes, math and vehicles.
– Duration: Estimated starting date: 2015-01-01, 20 weeks
– The work will be carried out at the Volvo Cars, Gothenburg.
– 1-2 students, Application at the latest 2015-12-05.
Cellevate
• Design and manufacture desktop electro-spinning
system
– Electro spinning uses a high-voltage to transform
polymers suspended in a liquid solution into
nanofibers
– The currently have container sized electro-spinning
system for making nanofiber filters
– This needs to be reproduced in miniature so it can be
used for R&D work
– SEK150,000 budget
– 2 students
Blind Cane Project
• In collaboration with Lund Kommun and
AutoIDExpert Scandinavia
• Lund Kommun is repaving part of Lund with
tiles that have embedded RFID tags.
• This project is to design and build a smart
cane for blind people that can use these RFID
tags to help them navigate
• 2 students.
House 3D Printer
• Project in collaboration with Helsingborg
Kommun to 3D print light-weight concrete
demo house, or street furniture
• Need to design and build concrete print-head
• Need to design and build print system
• 2~4 Students
BallBot
• Heavy duty low-cost robot sphere that can be
fired into building with air-cannon, be
wirelessly moved, and pickup different
information from building via built-in sensors
• Modular design so easy to change sensors
• Low-cost enough to be lost if building
collapses
Universal 3D printer
• 3D printer that runs on
plastic pellets instead of
filament
• To be used to print rubber
shoe insoles for diabetics
• 2 students: One to do
rubber printer, one to do
CAE of pressure relieving
shoe insole
6DOF robot printer
• Convert our 6DOF ABB robot
into 3D printer
• Will use either our pelletbased print-head or print with
2-pot polyurethane foam
Diamond / Ceramic 3D printer
• Converting our z-corp 3D
printer to use ceramic
materials that can be fired or
diamond powder that can be
sintered
• Need to develop both powder
and binder formulas and
complete process for making
green parts
Powder Flow Analysis
• Computational analysis of how powder in 3D
printer is spread.
• This is commonly done with spherical powder.
• We want to examine flow behaviour of nonspherical powder
